My opinion is that people shouldn't reserve things or give priority to the first person to send a PM etc. It just encourages the 'I'll bag it and think about it later' syndrome.
Imagine if it was like that in a shop -
Customer: "I'll take this please"
Shop: "Sorry someone said two days ago they were interested - I'm waiting for them..."

Just sell the stuff to the first person that gives the cash - with a reservation being say 30mins while someone says I'm on my way....

An this business of posts saying "Sent PM for the XXXXX" is just plain selfish bagging to put others off. I have had this and the member didn't even say they would have it - the PM was a asking if I'd take much less... Or someone else simply asking if it's still available - then nothing...
Let the seller post when it's sold only.
I get what you're saying but what happens when you live miles away from ... well ... practically everyone and whilst I don't mind travelling quite a distance to get exactly what I need, certainly can't do it at the drop of a hat?

I'm really grateful to the numerous people on this forum who have allowed me to reserve things and kept hold of it, sometimes for three or four weeks, (in one case a few months) until I can get over Zürich to collect. My living and dining room look so very much smarter for their understanding.

I have a foolproof method to get even. I post interesting things to sell that I don't have at great prices and put in an incorrect telephone number.

Ha! Game on!

We do often tend to delete such posts if we see them, especially from newbies. Very occasionally there may be some additional info or question relevant to others, but otherwise they should be binned. Feel free to report any such posts if you see them.

I think you have to expect this when selling goods on an internet forum.
Indeed. Here is someone I had some dealings with on Ricardo, the Swiss equivalent of eBay. Not an enviable reputation (although in my case I was lucky) . . .

I have so many stories (good and bad) of when we moved out of Switzerland. Lots of people not showing up, no call, no nothing... So at some point, someone came for something and asked for an other item reserved by someone else. I let it to that person. The person who reserved it was pretty pissed off and I understand it but I was sick and tired of people losing my time with questions, agreements, arrangements and not showing up.

Agreeing on a price and trying to bargain again when coming to collect it, etc. the worst are for the free stuff. asking extra pictures, dimension, if can be delivered... If I am on my way there and its small and easy to carry, fine but otherwise get your shit together, it's for free, dammit!

So when are you coming to collect the games table that's been filling up my basement since February?

You lilve SO far away .... And why on earth you don't bring it with you when we meet for coffee? It just shows a lack of initiative. Do you want to sell it or don't you???

Re: Bad manners from Forum members

I have just sold 3 sets of skis, each person arrived exactly on time & the deals were all concluded within 5 minutes. I had reserve buyers for the 2 sets I actually started a thread for!

All very easy, however I suspect pricing on the low side has a lot to do with this, people want a bargain, give it to them & save yourself grief.

Only had one really bad experience with someone on EF- that person recently asked for a big favour, that I would have been able to help with- but I am afraid I did not- first time I ever refused to help someone- nuff said

Re: Bad manners from Forum members

Not on EF - but those bad manners also happen in reverse. I wanted to buy something from someone who offered it on tutti.ch, contacted them, they replied immediately, we agreed I come buy to pick it up the next day at 6.30. It was a few towns away from where I live, so I took the train, showed up on time, no one was there. I rang the doorbell four times and waited for 35 mins before I finally gave up and left.

Well, guess they weren't too keen on selling their stuff after all

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

I have been lucky. I have sold, given away and bought things via EF and have not had a bad experience so far - this includes carting a big boxful of free crockery from Zug to Zürich HB on the train for someone who only had one or two posts... and he showed up and paid my train fare

My own bad experience has been with a potential Nachmieter on Homegate... took a morning off work to show my flat to a very professional-sounding Brit who was only available between 10 and 11 in the morning... and yes, she failed to turn up, and also failed to respond to my subsequent texts and voicemails.

It's definitely not just EF, it's people in general not giving a sh**.

I just hate flakey, timewasting people that keep you waiting, or don't even bother to get back to you. Really doesn't matter where they come from and what background they have, it's an all-new and steady growing low amongst our society!

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

at least you guys aren't suckers like I am...

I recently sold something on EF that I was willing to post, since I live even further out in the sticks than the OP (although we aren't too far from each other, too bad you're now moving to ZH!). Someone was interested, sent me their address and I got the item ready to post. Then I decided to post it before I received payment as I just trusted it would happen.

Of course, I haven't been paid, have tried a couple of times via PM to contact the person no luck. I know, my fault, and in general I didn't have a problem just getting rid of the things, but coverage for the cost of postage (9 CHF) would have been nice.

Ah well, live and (maybe) learn

I agree. But if it is last minute does that help?

I have an ad on Tutti for Ikea bar chairs which I could not sell here. Buyer sends an email, I reply. She calls the next morning, she will pick them up this morning. This morning she sends a text, she is coming this afternoon. Fine.
Late morning she sends a text, no, she is not coming this afternoon, she is coming Monday - 100% she says. We will see.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

got to say, maybe it's because I live in central Zurich but everyone from the forum who've bought things (most of them are those zero post people) have arrived immediately and been completely no hassle. We tried to sell our wardrobe on Ricardo, we said BRING TOOLS, ADDITIONAL PERSON AND VAN.

Some gormless drip turned up without any of those things and left soon after. I advertised in on the forum, I had two english guys turn up with power screwdrivers and a van, dismantled it and removed in in 20 minutes while I watched TV. Wouldn't even take a tea.

I once cycled 12Km (round trip) when selling some thing for 10chf. (My plan was to cycle to the pool anyways)
I had the day off and that person was working.

The morning of delivery it was raining, however, when I spoke to the buyer I told them even though I wasn't going to go to the pool any more I would still cycle there so we could meet for pick up.

She didn't show up! I got a message maybe 2 hours later saying "oh sorry lunch ran over so a meeting started late"
Are you kidding me. You couldn't have accessed your phone during lunch no?

I was a little peeved that day.
I will never understand people selling anything for 10 CHF. Even 100 CHF, as the matter of fact.
