I will never understand people selling anything for 10 CHF. Even 100 CHF, as the matter of fact.

In Lörrach, I get rid of the things I don't want to take to the upper-majestic-garbage-palace-place myself through the local add journal in the section "Gute Tat". Within 48 hours max, the cost is clear. No hassle. What's wrong with giving, we are not talking big bucks here?

I think she/he meant these things should be given for free.

Even if that was what was meant, 10 CHF for one person is "subjectively" more money than for another (or course 10=10 objectively). Where you draw the line (at 1, 10, 100 or 1000) depends on your own personality and on how "rich" you are, etc.

I would sell stuff for 1 CHF myself (and probably will post some books up soon) - stuff that I won't mind parting with, but depending on circumstances if I'm going to a bit of extra trouble for putting the advert and meeting someone I would prefer to receive something for it - otherwise I'd usually rather keep it. I think this is perfectly justified.

Here in Switzerland I think a lot of people give stuff away for free for the opposite reason. It is actually an easier/cheaper way to dispose of things (as opposed to filling out a paid-for trash bag or going to the electronics store). Which is a perfectly reasonable justification for giving the stuff "for free".

You don't understand someone selling something for 100chf? What an absolutely bizzarre statement.

I try to never give something away for free, money makes everything simpler, even if its 5 chf, a token amount. People don't take things seriously for free so an exchange always seems to work better - people turn up on time and make sure the thing works etc

I agree. But if it is last minute does that help?

I have an ad on Tutti for Ikea bar chairs which I could not sell here. Buyer sends an email, I reply. She calls the next morning, she will pick them up this morning. This morning she sends a text, she is coming this afternoon. Fine.
Late morning she sends a text, no, she is not coming this afternoon, she is coming Monday - 100% she says. We will see.
And no pick up on Monday. I sent a text. I tried to call. No response.
I sent an email. Nothing.

So 6 weeks later the chairs are finally gone, picked up by a very nice couple from Basel who called from their car to say they were running late.

I just sold a few items on Ricardo (I could not sell them on EF) and I was surprised by a rude comment. As a seller I can decide whether to answer or not, and whether to let the question and my reply appear for all to see. It wasn't really a question though so I just ignored it.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

In some cases selling things are an easier way to get rid them instead of giving them. Even selling them for just about what they are worth is better as well. When you give something on here, or sell it for next to nothing, it brings out a lot of people, who can't even afford it at cheap, and will try to get it for even less.

The problem with that, is if you want to get rid of your thing, but are willing to do it at price that is more of a charity to someone, but in the end it takes up your whole week to get it done, it becomes a burden.

Free items often get people who have no transport, to contact you, to convince you, to transport it for them, offering not even the proper amount in gas. I remember one member, in the past she always was asking to get free items transported to her from 1 to 2 hours away from other members.

I have done charity transports for other people when I am going the same way, and ask for gas or a bottle of something for it. My favorite thing in when such a simple thing is agreed upon, but the person who agrees to it, thinks it is the moral right to decide I shouldn't be drinking or what the true value of my gas is, and give me cookies, or less that amount. Or in the case of someone who asked me to move her apartment worth of stuff and some plants(I was under the impression it was a couple of things) I ended up doing to runs, and those plants turned out to be something entirely different then what I thought, but definitely botanically correct.

After spending my whole afternoon to help out, I was just going to ask for gas money, she looked at me and said, I can pay you in a beer right? I was thinking more like she might offer me a drink afterwards and give me the gas money. She pulled out this Austrian Aldi plonk. Ghetto is always ghetto.
That was not a forum member by the way, it was a friend of a friend.

I look over the free ads myself, because occasionally someone will give away something awesome. Like an EF member that was moving, and downsizing, offered an 1880's English desk. She then asked me scour her basement, and gave me a 1960's metrics Belgian Food scale, a few antique walking sticks, and an 1880's Australian Fridgerator. That was a real kool experience. But I showed up.

I agree with setting a price weeds some people out, and makes it more of a commitment. Doesn't mean the deal is done though.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

I've had 3 items this weekend with no shows, one free the other two at 10chf and 20chf. It's really not worth my time waiting for them not to show up and not to inform me that they are not going to collect.

It maybe my upbringing but I find it very rude and discourteous.
I wish we could name and shame.
I'm now at the point of not bothering trying to sell/give away anything.

It's completely out of order for someone to arrange to pick something up and then not show without any communication. People who do that and waste peoples valuable time on a weekend without some very, very genuine reason why they can't get in contact are bordering on scumbags in my opinion.

Completely agreed!

Also annoying are those who contact you multiple times changing the time and/or date of collection, don't show and are not contactable thereafter! Meanwhile, other parties who initially expressed interest have since been catered for.

Talking of naming and shaming. Some people who do this (I've just seen a recent example on this thread) really should examine themselves long and hard and ensure their own record is absolutely squeaky and pristine clean before doing so IMO. Just sayin'.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

I have to say that I have only sold or given away stuff a few times on here and overall they've been mostly positive experiences.
I once offered a load of household stuff for free as we had just combined two households and a new arrival who had literally nothing and was interested didn't have transport. I offered to take it to him for the cost of fuel ( it was only about 20km anyway) and he was so grateful he gave me four times what I asked for in thanks.

Well said. The only no show I've had after going to a considerable effort to get stuff to them involving other people too is one of the ones complaining on here.

Hmm, not expecting much from a public forum since I had a disappointing experience with one work colleague....he didn't show up because he....forgot! I am sorry I actually made another plans that Saturday in order to give him a nice item for free If people who are going to meet you again, and again can behave like that...I have no more comments.
Whatever I want to get rid of I just place in the garage with a sign "Gratis" and that's it. Usually they go, the fastest gone was an old and cheap acoustic guitar (it didn't sound well at all, but it was kind of beautiful) and then I throw away what is not wanted by anyone.
Of course I would like some change but I don't have enough patience for "games".

There are also the people who ask 1000 questions, technical details, pictures upon pictures, negotiate down the price and at the end (even if you agree to everything, even the price they asked for) are no longer interested. Wth?!

That's ok, I like talking to people, but they should just say so and then we can go for a beer and talk about "interesting stuff" instead of talking about <insert random item here>

Yep, I'm selling it for 10chf because it's in good condition, I don't want it any more, I don't want to just scrap it (recycling, been environmental and all that) and I'm trying to help someone out.
But really it's not worth the effort when you get asked for all these things.

I think I will try a road side gratis on these tomorrow.

I think if you want to have a beer, hey wait, are you still selling that multipart table? And for how much?
