Sell what? Posts in Marketplace don't count toward the 10 in order to advertise.

people want free stuff in order to sell on, eg on ricardo

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

While I agree with many of the comments on this thread, if you want to complain about bad manners from buyers, act the same when you are the buyer.

One of the posters on this thread has done exactly the same thing to me, insisting again and again that they will collect, which resulted in considerable extra effort after I turned down other interested parties. Because of this, I no longer reserve things for collectors.

So please act yourself the way you'd like others to act for you...

I second that - one of the frequent posters in this thread has also disappointed me in the past. Running a small furniture business: many promises were made on providing transport, but never happened. Lost a few good customers this way.

That sucks man, it's shame but you just can't trust people who fail to deliver on their promises like that.

When is 8pm not 8pm??

When people are collecting free stuff!!!

There was more stuff to give away - but those who have still not picked up the stuff tonight have ruined it for the rest. It will all being going to Hagenholz in future.

EDIT: That worked - 10mins later it is gone!!

Way out of order- but then we gave lots of stuff on Freecycle in UK that we thought might be for re-sale. What I truly hate is waste- so if it does not end up in landfill, then that's ok.

I wonder if it's the same person that the other people have also been moaning about or if there is more than one person?

I personally don't think it is way out of order. Those who pretend to give away free stuff solely because they are such a generous kind should not be interested in what the receiver is going to do with the said stuff.

You'd like to believe that an object you don't need anymore is going to be taken by the needy, what if the "needy" need money more? Isn't it normal to try to sell it? Why didn't you do it yourself? Admit it, you thought your time is worth more than wasting it on making arrangements with undecided buyers, and finally, it would cost you something to throw it away. C'mon.

Frankly, I don't see anything fundamentally wrong here, even though I wouldn't do that myself.
Live and let live.

P.S. "You" is not you, Odile.

Because it's not going to do anything except start groan and rep fests. Maybe someone had a very good reason for not showing, and it doesn't foster a community to start bashing each other.

Don't ask me why people never bother to pick up the phone or send a courtesy email in this day and age, but it seems to be pretty common. What ever happened to basic manners?

I think you're wrong.

Even stuff given away for free has a value. Giving it away to someone who needs it is a charitable act.
No everyone gives stuff away because they can't be bothered to take it to the tip.

If one, for example, had a pram that one no longer needed and felt that you could offer it to a new mother in need but instead, some old bloke took it away and sold it for beer and cigarettes, you have a right to feel a little put out.

If one gave money(again, this has value) to a charitable organisation to help re-build schools in Palestine, you'd be be a bit annoyed if it ended up funding the purchase of Israeli rocket launchers.

In your book, there appears to be no difference and if you think there is then you're the one making judgments and not the person who wants their free item to go to someone who would use it.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

I gave stuff away for free because it is a ballache to sell stuff on EF/Ricardo/Ebay that is worth only a few CHF. The pain/time is greater than the financial reward.

But even then there is the hassle of agreeing a time, people turning up, people turning up on time etc etc.

Maybe I am now just too old and too grumpy, but I can't be bothered with it anymore - far easier to just load it in the back of the car and dump it.

Oh, I see. Thanks for picking up the "pram and poor mother" example, out of so many real life (EF) situations (chunky tasteless pieces of furniture for instance..). Yes, I would be hurt if my pram would go wasted on an old bloke's cigarets and drinks instead of going to a poor mother, but if I was so concerned about it I would try to give it away for free in other places than on an expat forum such as EF.

Yes, I would be bothered to see my money go wasted instead of rebuilding schools in Palestine, that is why I would make sure I donate the much needed money to a respectable charity/organisation, that from time to time sends you home reports on how the money were spent. Unicef does that, for instance.

It is not at all the same thing as giving away free stuff on EF.
Higher than you attitude all over again. Whateva'.
