Oh, I see. Thanks for picking up the "pram and poor mother" example, out of so many real life (EF) situations (chunky tasteless pieces of furniture for instance..). Yes, I would be hurt if my pram would go wasted on an old bloke's cigarets and drinks instead of going to a poor mother, but if I was so concerned about it I would try to give it away for free in other places than on an expat forum such as EF.
.
That's not what you implied before.

Make up your mind.

Yes, I would be bothered to see my money go wasted instead of rebuilding schools in Palestine, that is why I would make sure I donate the much needed money to a respectable charity/organisation, that from time to time sends you home reports on how the money were spent. Unicef does that, for instance.
.
Nope, again you didn't understand.

What if your Unicef money was spent, not as you assumed, but on a Rolls Royce for the CEO?

It is not at all the same thing as giving away free stuff on EF.
Of course it's not the same.

My point was that everything has value - even free stuff to give away on EF.

(Giving 1000CHF a month to a charity doesn't have much value to the giver if they're earning 1,000 000 CHF a month)

The irony.

I will leave that here, it is pointless. You picked up the pram example and ruthless bloke, inserted some Palestine schools and Israeli rockets in the process, me being wrong both at the beginning and in the end, and now you're hurt I don't see your point, other than making me looking bad.

No, You are right. Happy now?

LE. Some people sell (unwanted) stuff to make a living, to put some bread on the table. In case you didn't know. Maybe they are unemployed. Not all of them are ruthless blokes who'd use the money to buy booze and ciggies. As I said in my previous message, sometimes the needy need money more than a piece of furniture or an old lamp. Things like these are usually given for free here...

Yes, I'm happy that I've made the point that there is another point of view apart from your own. Unfortunately you don't seem to be happy with the fact.

I don't mind if someone makes it clear they intend to sell something on, no problem at all, but I'd rather give to someone who isn't and really needs it, not too hard to understand is it??

Rather then put myself out for someone who is just using me as a cash cow its far easier to just drop whatever it is down the brocki

"Most" could be 2 people out of 3. On EF. (I did restricted the quantity to people who made a comment on the subject)
No, no need to worry, really.

How can you be sure that people really need something? OK, they might need it but not because they couldn't afford buying that object.
Besides, thinking that those people who would sell the free stuff are using you as a cash cow, probably in order to buy themselves luxury items, is not always right, IMHO.
I, for one, if I decide to give away some free stuff on EF, I wouldn't really care what are they going to do with it - use it themselves or sell it. I know that would cost me some money and time to dispose of it anyway.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

Even worse when you offer to go miles and hours out of your way to help someone who then just does not turn up- costing you petrol, time and hassle. But hey ho- I would never let a tiny number of people who behave very badly put me off doing what I think is right. Happened to me, and worse us, twice via EF. It would take an awful lot of persuading to get OH to do that again though.

But even then there is the hassle of agreeing a time, people turning up, people turning up on time etc etc.
Maybe I am now just too old and too grumpy, but I can't be bothered with it anymore - far easier to just load it in the back of the car and dump it.
Not much older and grumpier than most of people I know then.
Which is a pity, nevertheless. (just for the record, I have never benefited from the free stuff thing on EF, but I can imagine that for some people it is really helpful)

Splendid Idea.
Oh yeah, right. And the options, as I see them, would be:
What would you prefer to happen with that dam' free stuff you apparently are so attached to
A) That someone who really needs free stuff, picks up your free stuff in order to
- use it
- sell it to buy a dinner for him and his family
B)
- give it away to someone that could actually afford buying it, but they prefer to save some money and if it is for free, what the heck, why not.
C)
- give it away anyway regardless, the only condition being to show up on time
D)
- give it away after signing a contract where it is specified that the receiver will never sell it and develop a real attachment to the said object
E)
.
.
.

I am curious how the options should be formulated in order to rather encompass all the not so white-and-black aspects of real life than the pseudo - moral high grounds of a few EFers.

It is funny how my first post on the subject was deconstructed in order to prove a "point", whereas in fact it was clear that I was referring to the usual free stuff given on EF (btw, not prams to the poor mother, neither money to schools in Palestine), and even explained the situations in which I thought that selling it further would not be the most abominable thing one could think of.

I should have saved my breath, as I really don't have any beef with the matter.
I don't/didn't take or give/gave free things on EF, I don't and din't sell, neither buy/bought things here. Never, thank God. It was about a principle.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

As we approach the end of the year I feel the need to rant about just how rude forum members can be.

I advertise elsewhere so I do have a good basis for comparison. With my other ads few people change their minds after saying they are interested. I have only ever had one no show from an ad elsewhere.

If I reserve an item I expect the EF buyer/taker will follow through. I just wish people would be honest if they change their mind. I don't think this is too much to ask.
