Citing the actual law, but still everybody states his assumptions, half knowledge and mostly wrong opinion.

I think you misread and/or misinterpreted my post - you got it arse-about-face, methinks.
Wait. Back it up. I think I interpreted it correctly. If I, as an American, thought that only non-Americans believed they were culturally superior, then that in itself would be ironic because I would be implying that Americans believe they are culturally superior in believing that only non-Americans believe that they are culturally superior...

Okay, I'm dizzy now. Must lay down...

Re: What's your EF pet hate?

Those who whine and complain that there's too much of a British bias on EF.

I just don't see it myself but then again, maybe I'm biased.

Re: What's your EF pet hate?

There IS a strong British flavour here, but then there are many people from the UK here. We also usually quote the BBC, but then they do usually get the story correct, and with a minimum of racial or religious bias.

Posting a useful answer at the page break. And nobody reads or acknowledges it.
I seem to have an inborn talent for doing just that, seems to happen with at least half of my better posts; but what really hacks me off is that then someone else posts basically a re-write of what I'd said a few posts later and they get oodles and oodles of Thanks and 'aren't you clever' comments. Grrrrrr.

What are the odds this us going to be the last post on a page?

Doesn't that rather depend on how the reader has set up their viewing? Isn't there an option to choose differing numbers of posts per page?
In that case the last post on a page for you may actually be in the middle of a page for somebody else.

I think it is possible to set it to 20 or 40 posts per page, but I'm too computer illiterate to work out how.

Personally I think people are just choosing to ignore my well chosen words of wisdom!

Re: What's your EF pet hate?

My second pet hate/peeve is people who come on here and say "I want to move to Switzerland" …. but for no reason what so ever, other than they think it looks nice! They've never been here, have no clue what life is like, but are desperate to find a way to live here!

I don't get it. I can understand if you have a boyfriend/girlfriend here, or if you want to work for a specific company etc. But why just pick Switzerland off the map and say "I want to live there, even though it's virtually impossible". Do people think it's all chocolate and cheese here or what??

Re: What's your EF pet hate?

A couple of things.

The tedious old "why can't the Swiss be more like us?" observations. Why don't they giggle all the time at strangers and chat to me on the tram? Why don't my neighbours knock on my door for a natter every evening? [Crikey, hard to think of anything worse.]

The same moaners never ask: "Why can't the Swiss commit as much crime as we get in London? Gah! I feel so annoying SAFE! Why are the streets so infuriatingly clean? Why the hell can't they cancel every third train just like they do at home?"

And clique-iness.

There is an EF mob mentality, usually seen at its goriest and most cruel when someone new, or not well-regarded by the mob, posts something mildly controversial.

It's not exclusive to EF; this happens on any popular, long-running forum, and probably, in other ways, in most schools and large workplaces. I've never been a member, nor a victim of it, but I feel uncomfortable when I witness it, and is one of the reasons I don't read EF daily, as I once did.

Apart from that occasionally-seen unpleasant edge, I think EF is actually a pretty decent community with a good mixture of humour, intelligence and helpfulness.

Despite the frustrations, it's given me considerable net benefit in the 5 years I've been here.

It's the two fold popularity system, thanks&groans, and then the more obscure blobbies, or whatever their technical name is.

With thanks, groans, the reader puts their name behind their opinion, .. and it's safer to thank than to groan. Negative rep points can apparently be doled out anonymously. So if you don't want to be dragged into a flame war with an ardent git, just tip the scales as you please.

In one way it's nice, it lays out the pecking order right away, and helps you to recognize who to ignore as outcasts, and who to shamelessly flatter because they can make or break you on a whim. It does save one all that tedious thinking, forming opinions on their own.

Since I wandered into the wrong thread at the wrong time, in the wrong mood, I now number among the tainted, my remaining purpose in life to serve as a warning to others. Woe, oh woe is me.

I think for the most part the map they pick it off of includes a note of average salaries. But possibly not the average cost of living.

I don't see the issue with this. That's what I did, I was offered a job and I thought I'd give it a shot. I did the same when I moved to Bahrain and I know many foreigners who moved to the UK because they thought it would be interesting to live there.
