Re: Switzerland: The most BORING place. WARNING: Long complaining rant...

Best thread I have read in ages on any forum....a real deckchair and popcorn moment. Kudos to the original poster for being brutally honest about their experience...

Can I throw in Swiss driving as being the worst I have ever encountered including KL, Hong Kong and France - smoking and talking on mobiles/cells as they drive about two inches from your rear end and a total lack of indication especially at roundabouts. Nightmare.

Other than that, three months in and I love the place

[sits back in deckchair, opens a beer, munches popcorn and watches the thread continue to unfold.... ]

The OP seems to be an export product in the tradition of Nickelback and Justen Bieber.

Nevertheless, an entertaining post. A pity that I can't both thank and groan it

Re: Switzerland: The most BORING place. WARNING: Long complaining rant...

I think the OP actually nailed it down quite accurately. Yes, she is blunt and sometimes exaggerates but she's not far off in my opinion. I think she really tried to understand Switzerland. Most expats don't know the country as well as she does and just live their own life on the sideline of society and can't be bothered. Switzerland is not an easy country for foreigners to integrate. It starts to work on my nerves as well to read every day again new articles in the press where you find the word "problem" and "foreigner" in the same sentence.
Maybe the only long-term solution for happiness here is to become a full Swissophile (the ones that groan every negative comment here) and continuously repeat to yourself that Switzerland is the best until you are 100% convinced. And then you post 10'000 or more messages on an english forum as a proof:-)

I have to admit, I'm tired of the anti-balkan, anti-turk and anti-jewish underhanded remarks I hear from people. Or being told I'm not "one of those" foreigners. There is a culture of xenophobia here, and I stay away from it by surrounding myself with other non-conformists like me. The gender roles also bug me and it is difficult to be taken as seriously as a woman here. I don't like parties when the men get to sip whiskey while the women are stuck in the kitchen, which is why I always impose and make myself a nuisance with the drinking men in such situations.
Yup, because the best way to educate unenlightened indigenous peoples is to impose our vastly superior culture upon them at every opportunity.

As I said earlier in this thread:

Quote:
Expecting the people of another country to conform to the cultural expectations of a tiny subset of the population of an entirely different country is absurd. It's funny how the people who boast most about their "tolerance" and "open-mindedness" can't handle the fact that some people in Switzerland see the world in a different way to their chums back in Toronto or Los Angeles or London. Are we only prepared to tolerate cultures with values identical to our own? Doesn't sound very open to me.
So some Swiss people have a different understanding of the world from some college-educated, professional anglophones? Well, we can't possibly have that!

The colonialist spirit has never really died, has it?

Another one of these multi-post threads, with varying advice for the OP ...... but with minimal input from them, after the initial 3 posts.

There's a name for people who create controversy, and then sit back and watch, isn't there?

I'm fluent in four languages, and I've lived on three continents and spent the bulk of my childhood in the third world and then as a refugee. When people start conversations telling me how horrible refugees and "those" foreigners are, I try to shame them, not educate them. After my childhood, I don't have the patience to educate people. If I gave a damn about educating people I would have become a teacher. It's not my job to enlighten stupid people that think they're superior to people fighting to stay alive.

My culture is an conglomeration of a few that I find logically beneficial to society and me. Because I like staying alive. And racism and sexism is not part of my culture.

People: Your best friends don't have to be Swiss. They can anybody that appeals to you and makes you happy and comfortable in their presence. Lord knows there are tons of non-Swiss here who would love to be your friend.

Stop trying to be accepted and start accepting the people who make you smile and care about you. Doors will open to beautiful rooms you had no idea existed.
