Believe me they enforce drivers more strictly in the UK, I see lots of idiots here in Switzerland every day, texting and talking on their mobile phones while driving, plus the impatience of Swiss car drivers is unbelievable. In the UK I would have probably just got a warning for my misdemeanour.
Except in Cambridge...because of the wheel wars, policing of bicyclists is sporadic but heavy WHEN it happens. At least the £30 penalties some people get for not having lights are redeemable at local shops for a set of same

Highway code enforcement in UK varies hugely depending on county, Cambridgeshire is rubbish at it, but Coventry (whichever county Rugby is in) very "good" (matter of perspective)

FYI, I was on the road and there was definitely nobody using that crossing.
As you've learned, the law doesn't give you the option of running the red just because you didn't see anyone around.

All complaints by complainants are worthwhile. To me 60.- for jumping a red light at an innocuous crossing on my bike is worth a little rant, thank you
I can't say 60 bucks would be enough for me bother with the effort of a rant!

...Something I`m not too sure of - if anyone can answer this (?) - may a pedestrian cross a road, without using the pedestrian crossing? Without risking getting fined? (I think it`s called Jay walking?)
Items 900 onwards are for pedestrians, http://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifie...ndex.html#app1

To be fair you should always exercise extreme caution when driving a car, because of the unexpected. Here in Switzerland people don't expect the unexpected, hence people cross at crossings or drive away at lights when its their right of way without looking for any hazards and that is dangerous.

FYI, I was on the road and there was definitely nobody using that crossing.
Well Tobias, I think that this is exactly how it should work for pedestrians. It's the drivers responsibility to be careful, because it's you who's dangerous. Using a car is a privilege, which doesn't mean that you are privileged. I think it's a part of bigger philosophy of making car owners life miserable. Which of course can be annoying for us, but at the end seems right. My hometown is possessed by cars, and local laws doesn't make it easier to live there. In example - pedestrians does not have the right of way, unless they are already on the lane (means that you sometime wait couple of minutes to cross the road). In general modern idea of city traffic is pedestrians>bikes>cars. And i agree.

2) Boot on the other foot - me on my bike nearly got mowed down on a roundabout by some w*r. I realised afterwards he'd decided I was going straight on but in fact I was going around the roundabout (having driven with no problems here for over 25 years, I knew I did nothing wrong) . I only just managed to veer off the road as his car bumper was an inch from my back wheel. Scared the bejeebers out of me.... and to cap it all he stopped his car & screamed at me in French. Now you try to defend yourself with an English accent in French while some maniac is giving you abuse. His f*g wife just sat there like a Barbie doll (which she looked like) so no doubt she's used to his character. He looked like an alcoholic who'd had a rough night. And I was the victim. No one stopped to help. I hope he rots in hell. I am now scared of riding my bike. I am however one of the oddities who does respect traffic lights & road rules on my bike.
That's exactly why I ride my bycicle in the middle of the lane while in the circle. In fact, usually I'll be in the middle maybe 5-20 meters before entering.

I haven't learnt anything, sorry except to make sure there are no cops about when making minor infractions.

Why didn't you wait until your 3rd day with your misdemeanor?

I believe the fine is double if you do not pay immediately when stopped by police in person, i.e. choose to get bill sent to you.

Can I say to some passengers in car, they should take some responsibly and not to distract the driver whilst he/she is driving.
