Bad time to get fined jumping a red light with current inflation

Never a good time and yes, I know, I shouldn't have done it, but damn these Swiss police are sneaky. What with current inflation rates that was an extremely expensive misdemeanour 60 Chufs to save a few minutes = 45 quid, strewth. Can't they chase after some real criminals, like the ones stashing their wealth here illegally?

Re: Bad time to get fined jumping a red light with current inflation

Well, if the UK had fewer criminal problems, they could benefit, and fill the local coffers with a bit more enforcement of driving code. More monitored cameras would help too.

Many people who leave CH will have become better drivers, after financially painful reminders that lights and signs are there for a reason (even if one doesn't always "agree" with them).

I should point out I was on a bicycle and it was on a very quiet street at a pedestrian crossing.

Believe me they enforce drivers more strictly in the UK, I see lots of idiots here in Switzerland every day, texting and talking on their mobile phones while driving, plus the impatience of Swiss car drivers is unbelievable. In the UK I would have probably just got a warning for my misdemeanour.

I've got my license few weeks before moving here, so it wasn't painful to adopt local habits. The problem is, now when I go back to Poland I make other drivers crazy with obeying every single sign, not exceeding speed limit etc.
Believe me, I hear horn on my back several times a day.
But, I feel that the way it works here is the right way.

They're the cause of the currency unpegging that's making your misdemeanours so expensive!

Pedestrian crossing are for pedestrians - people walking.

We very nearly had a bad accident the other day when two teenagers suddenly whizzed over the pedestrian crossing in front of us on a bicycle - laughing and blushing at their near miss.

I was all for stopping them and calling the cops (just to teach them a "life-saving" lesson) - but we were late for an appointment so had to let it go.

If we`d connected with them ...... they would both have been very badly damaged, plus it would have meant 2 years of court cases with a meantime withdrawal of drivers licence for my husband, which would have badly affected his employment.

So GOOD - I`m glad to hear the police are finally waking up about this danger to car drivers.

Re: Bad time to get fined jumping a red light with current inflation

I expect we all have cyclist stories.
1) My son was about 5 years old & some stupid cow on a bike came screaming down the hill & smacked straight into him. There was a herd of little ones coming home from school & I was with him. He went straight over backwards & could have been killed as there was a high kerb. I was so angry I let rip in English. I imagine she'll never do that again.
2) Boot on the other foot - me on my bike nearly got mowed down on a roundabout by some w*r. I realised afterwards he'd decided I was going straight on but in fact I was going around the roundabout (having driven with no problems here for over 25 years, I knew I did nothing wrong) . I only just managed to veer off the road as his car bumper was an inch from my back wheel. Scared the bejeebers out of me.... and to cap it all he stopped his car & screamed at me in French. Now you try to defend yourself with an English accent in French while some maniac is giving you abuse. His f*g wife just sat there like a Barbie doll (which she looked like) so no doubt she's used to his character. He looked like an alcoholic who'd had a rough night. And I was the victim. No one stopped to help. I hope he rots in hell. I am now scared of riding my bike. I am however one of the oddities who does respect traffic lights & road rules on my bike.

Re: Bad time to get fined jumping a red light with current inflation

Can't tell you how many times I've seen a cyclist jumping a red light both here and in the UK. It doesn't matter that there's no one on the crossing you should still stop, sorry. I nearly got hit in the UK by a courier cyclist jumping the lights. If I hadn't grabbed hold of his handlebars I'd have been knocked to the ground. All he was worried about was getting his delivery done.

Courier cyclists are special kind of human beings. I know one guy who has got a ticket for... speeding There was limit of 30kmh , he was running 42. Unfortunately didn't notice a police car behind.

Lucky you did not jump a red light in a car, then at least the complaint would be worth while.

Re: Bad time to get fined jumping a red light with current inflation

To be fair you should always exercise extreme caution when driving a car, because of the unexpected. Here in Switzerland people don't expect the unexpected, hence people cross at crossings or drive away at lights when its their right of way without looking for any hazards and that is dangerous.

FYI, I was on the road and there was definitely nobody using that crossing.

I always compare Swiss prices to the rest of world and I am continuously shocked and no I do not earn 120K, thats why I ride a bicycle and don't drive a Ferrari.

All complaints by complainants are worthwhile. To me 60.- for jumping a red light at an innocuous crossing on my bike is worth a little rant, thank you

Thats almost 3 beers in the pub.

That was the reason the teenagers didn`t end up scraping the road surface.

You have my (sort-of) sympathy - getting a fat fine for doing something that at the time endangered no-one. But still .....you took your chance, and got fined.
Something I`ve gotten used to here is to live by the rule "behave as an alien in an alien land, and obey all the rules" to the best of one`s ability. And don`t take chances.

You say you "were on the road" - but you used a marked pedestrian crossing to ride over? Why?
Did you feel safer using the pedestrian crossing to ride over?

Actually that makes me smile as I read it, because you got zapped without having any bad intentions.

Something I`m not too sure of - if anyone can answer this (?) - is may a pedestrian cross a road without using the pedestrian crossing? Without risking getting fined? (I think it`s called Jay walking?)
