Same here in Romandie. It is still traditional here to eat 'Gateau au fromage' and fruit tart, with or without 'guêlon' on Fridays. Guêlon is a milk, sugar and egg mix (like real custard) poured over the fruit before cooking, In our family we never had 'guêlon' and prefered pure fruit- but then we had a big orchard, with lots of different apples, pears, plums, greengages, hazelnuts and a big strawberry patch and all sorts of soft fruits, gooseberries, raspberries, blackcurrant, redcurrant, rhubarb, etc.

We also spent autumn Sundays picking wood strawberries, wild raspberries and blueberries for the Friday tarts- and all because none of us liked fish, and especially sea fish- which we couldn't get anyhow!

Brother loved the Käsewähe (most likely close to your Gâteau au Fromage) but detested the Rhabarber while I hated the Käsewähe but loved the Rhabarberwähe. So that we simply exchanged the stuff and were happy

Re: Swiss 'Fish' species racism!

I was really annoyed when I visited the UK recently and was unable to find a fondue restaurant as apparently the British don't like the smell of melted cheese.

All I could find were "pubs" selling the same stuff - a feeble attempt at a curry, lasagna with chips, ricotta and spinanch canneloni and roast dinners. I was astounded as it was jolly cold outside and fondue is fine winter food. I was also unable to find a Merlot Ticino to go with my lasagna (and chips) nor a grappa to finish off the meal.

The British are clearly cheese racists.

Not really sure what you're getting at here, I was highlighting the Swiss distaste for Fish in a joke-like fashion..and for being the only country in Europe that does not have an abundance of choice for people who like fish. Cheese is not a living being for a start...and if true (about the melted cheese bit) the British would never force their views on what others like to eat (generally)... ..I also know plenty of Swiss people who don't like fondue or cheese products..

Even here out in the sticks, there are 2 portuguese fish shops which sell anything fishy you could possibly dream of. Maybe you are not looking hard enough.

Re: Swiss 'Fish' species racism!

Silly question, but isn't there a fishmonger at Im Viadukt? I thought there used to be one there.. Has s/he left? I found the following that suggests it's still a possibility:
Braschler Fishmonger in Viadukt
This diagram also shows "Fisch" in the upper right-hand corner of the diagram. Is it of poor quality?

Cheers!

Re: Swiss 'Fish' species racism!

our local coop has a selection of at least 10 different types of fish, mainly salt water fish. that is about as much of a selection or even more than we would get at the average fishmonger in nz. can't complain really
