Phonecalls of 1 sec from various numbers

Hello!
I've been unlucky enough to have my cellphone number somehow ending up to some dodgy companys list. I get pretty much 1 a day a 1 sec phonecall from various numbers (different area codes but number usually starts 588, so fxl today's number was 041 5880269). I never have enough time to pick it up, so I end up often having to call it back myself. When someone there picks up, they start with some questions about my health insurance provider. Unfortunately I don't remember their name (my german is not that great yet), but I'm absolutely sure it's the same company doing this to me every day I can recoginize the backroundsound of this callcenter already. I have tried diffrent tactics to shake them off; not interested, not speaking german, not being the person in my household who decides about insurance etc. But nothing works. 2 times I got an english speaker and I tried to explain that my husband decides about such things and if they could kindly remove me from the list, but nope. Got 3 calls this week already. Blocking the caller doesn't work, because they are using always a different nr. Not replying missed calls is not a solution either, since I am a freelancer and get often calls from unknown numbers. If someone knows how to see the length of a missed call on Iphone would be great, since they only let it ring 1 sec. (So I end up paying for this crap) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. They are driving me nuts, help! (I just googled it and found that it is probably the "Informationzentrum Krankenkasse Bern" and found other people having problems with them, no advice what to do though)

Ignore them and if you do manage to answer one then give them a mouthful on how useless they are

You call them back???

If they always hang up after one second, it's pretty certain it's them who's calling. Don't return the call

Re: Phonecalls of 1 sec from various numbers

You now know that all these calls have the 041 588 in common. Stop answering them and stop returning the calls, at least until you've had a chance to Google the number. You should not end up paying anything if you don't answer or return the call.

I did a quick Google search for the number you posted and it comes up as an aggressive telemarketer.

Re: Phonecalls of 1 sec from various numbers

The numbers are varying quite a lot, pretty much always different area codes and sometimes they start 508. The problem is that I cannot see if it rang only 1 sec or longer on my phone and often I don't even hear when it rings so shortly. When I do, like today, the I just block that number right away. And yes, I mostly call back unanswered calls, since I get a lot of work related calls on my cell.

Re: Phonecalls of 1 sec from various numbers

Ive been receiving the calls too and I did call back after ignoring them for about a month. From what I could understand some people have complained about the health insurance getting more expensive and they wanted to offer me some package or some deal. I told them my husband handles all such matters and we will call back if we are interested. Of course they are still giving me missed calls. I wonder if they do it on purpose to make me call back and pay for the call. It is very annoying. If I manage to pick their phone up im certainly not going to be very polite.

Re: Phonecalls of 1 sec from various numbers

The point to the whole affair probably is:
Telemarketing is allowed in CH, even to people who opted-out (see below) if they call the marketer of if there's a relationship in place already. By having you call them (back) they bypass any potential legally tricky situations.

If your number (fixed line or mobile) is listed you can have your number marked with an asterisk which says that you want to not be called for telemarketing. Add the asterisk here (local.ch). For non-listed numbers have it entered in a separate, non-public list (or send a letter to that effect to Schweizer Dialogmarketing Verband, Postfach 616, 8501 Frauenfeld)

Tell the firm contacting you, by phone or if necessary by registered mail, that you want to not be contacted again, ever, and that you demand they strike you from their internal database effective immediately. Make sure you remember the contacts name, and when you told them. Refer them to Article 13 Datenschutzgesetz

If nothing helps you can report them based on Strafgesetzbuch Article 179septies. For that you need to note when you were called from which number, and have your phone provider supplement the details such as name and address (it seems they must do that if you can show in a believable manner that you're being harassed). I guess a simple list of calls (date, time, number unless suppressed) should have at least 10-20 entries. In such a case you may want to contact the Stiftung für Konsumentenschutz beforehand for additional advice/info.

Re: Phonecalls of 1 sec from various numbers

If you're getting calls on your mobile phone then you can download an app called "Should I answer?".

When you get a call it can identify the number and automatically block it (if the number is in the database) otherwise you then have the option to add it. I have it installed and it has blocked a few calls from the UK (on my UK number). It's free and worth a try.

Not sure if this exists for Apple though.

Re: Phonecalls of 1 sec from various numbers

Just another word of advice, relevant to this discussion. Never say yes on the phone when answering a call from someone you don't know. There are dodgy companies recording calls and then setting you up with different long-distance telecom, fly by night insurance, etc. When consumers get billed and later sent to collection, they will say they have a recording of you agreeing to their services.

Trust me, this happens all the time in DE and is happening more often in CH. If it does happen, tell them to betreibung you...they won't. We had to have Swisscom change our # due to one of these scams as they blocked our long-distance calling and even Swisscom couldn't fix the issue without changing our #.
