Moved into a new place.

Alright, so I've never done this before. Moving into a WG.

I was quite excited by the prospect, but I'm getting mad as hell, at the people who are living here. I'm not going to respond to anyone trying to provoke me, but I will stand my ground, and I will get the police involved if this continues. (edit: a bit more context) it's a new place, people have only been living here for about 2 weeks, it's also still under renovation.

I've had 3 different people shouting at me, being aggressive telling me that cleaning the kitchen is my responsibility and I have no bloody idea what sort of mindset these people have, in which they think they have a right to treat me like this.

Another thing, I was cooking in the kitchen, and they started getting aggressive towards me when I wanted the door shut (they were sitting outside). And then he told me to go the toilet... honestly what the are these people?

Any comments? Should I keep a journal of incidents like this? I will not stand to be treated this way.

Re: Moved into a new place.

What's a WG? Some sort of communal house?
It's fairly standard in German campsites for people to growl "nicht sauber" as they breathe & watch what you're putting the in rubbish bin in case you commit a crime of non recycling or using the kitchen sink (screams in horror) to clean your teeth ... which actually was not the case - just a habit of walking around with toothbrush in mouth before going off to the sinks in the shower room to actually clean teeth. Don't leave even a grain of rice in the sink after you've been in the kitchen. You must have one sponge to wash your dishes & a cloth or sponge to clean the sink afterwards.
Why do you think the police would care unless there has been a murder or physical assault? They have more important things to do.

Alright, so I've never done this before. Moving into a WG.
This is how any shared flat (WG) works:
- you are part of a community (pack of wolves)
- the community has explicit or implicit rules
- a community has alphas, betas and gammas

The alphas do what they want, the gammas just fit in. The betas are sandwiched in between and sort themselves out.

Find your place in that community - as you notice, physical proximity makes this somewhat unavoidable.

I'd very, very strongly advise you to not even think about involving any authorities in your process to adapt. Your life in the community will be hell the moment anybody notices.

You need to work on your yourself (you do have duties in a shared flat!) and with the rest of your flat mates to build a viable community. Do not take the stance of "this is my right" - assume your duties, not only your privileges, and solve the challenge.

If this does not work out, then move out and appreciate this valuable lesson learnt for life.

Re: Moved into a new place.

If it's not a good fit, move out. I've lived in WG for 15 years now and can tell you that trying to just do your own thing will not work. Involving the police will not improve the atmosphere and to be honest - you are overreacting.

If you want to stay in the flat, sit down with everyone and talk about the what they expect with regards to standards of cleanliness, noise, visitors, purchasing items, splitting bills. You should have done this before moving in but it seems you did not or not properly. Make sure you establish clear rules that are applicable to EVERYONE. Then stick to them but bear in mind that slight deviations will happen and you have to learn to live with that. As mentioned above, the alphas will more than likely not feel that the rules apply to them.

The judicious display of the preserved body parts of the most offensive member of the community at key points around the apartment (kitchen sink, lavatory, hall hat stand, mantlepiece) should serve as a reminder to the others as to who, precisely, is the boss here.

Saltpetre may be procured for this purpose from a friendly pharmacist or butcher.

Surely that is step 2.

Step 1 is to keep the larder well stocked:

That would tell me that perhaps some of the blame may lie with me.

If everyone in the place thinks you are behaving badly then perhaps you ought to sit down with them and ask them what you are doing wrong - and then do it right, or move out.

Usually closing the kitchen door is considered good practice as it keeps the smell off the rest of the apartment, that reaction (the way you present the matter) makes little sense. And what exactly were you doing when asked to do that on the toilet instead?

No offense, but seeing you ask in another thread about your "rights about using incense in your room" makes it plausible that you are the issue, as opposed to everybody else. The question about legality should be last on your list, you should have talked to your apartment-mates first as you're part of a community.

Make up for that asap, know and respect the "do and don't".

"And then he told me to go the toilet"
I think the OP has written a polite way of what he was told to go do figuratively rather than a literal manner.

Just move, WG:s aren't exactly hard to find.. You need to be on the same level as the people you share with or its hell.

Re: Moved into a new place.

As you are all probably aware i am the only smoker of cigs here. When i was young i tried to cover up the fact with insense.

Even for smokers, it is a horrible smell and gets into bedding, hair, throat etc.

If, perchance, you want to burn incense for a religious reason. I would suggest you get in touch with your nearest temple.

That was not written in a nasty way. Just trying to help.

It's only second-hand incense smoke and only a few puffs anyway. Get over it.

It's not as if it gets in your clothes, bedding, hair or throat is it?

You're such a bl**dy hypocrite.

Re: Moved into a new place.

Sharing a flat involves a bit of give and take - there are obviously issues involved. Have a sit down, thrash it out, draw up a rota of shared duties if that helps. If all the others seem to be on your case then you have to look at yourself and you might find the answer.

Years ago I used to share with 2 brothers + their Mum + 1 girlfriend of a very well known rocker - now that was stress.

Re: Moved into a new place.

do you have possibility to rent a flat on your own? Try it. I have found incredibly cheap flat in ZH area. Ok... kitchen and bathroom are small (i mean really small) but at least i am alone and price is completely crazy. Normally you pay this amount for small room in ZH area. I cross my fingers for you I hope you will find solution
