Baggage trolley in Geneva airport

I don't get it why would you pay 2 franks for the baggage trolley in geneva airport when you can ask for free in the information desk.
So much hassle.

Re: Baggage trolley in Geneva airport

It's simply to encourage people to bring their trolley back, and not let it anywhere cluttering the place! You get your 2.- back anyway.

Haven't been to a Swiss supermarket yet, have you?

Oh is that so?
I've been to Coop Kerzers, but the trolley is free though.

Yep. Get used to it - most shops that have trolleys require either a 1 or 2 Franc coin (or a little substitute coin/token often called a Jeton). It is a pain when you are a new arrival or tourist, as many of these folks do not have 2 Franc coins on hand to get a trolley. But yes, the idea is to get you to return the trolley.

FYI, a UK 2p piece fits in the trollies at the airport. Might save you a trek to the information desk.....

Yes you do, you put Chf 2.-- in the slot on the trolley, and unchain it, when you take it back you push the chain back in and the Chf 2.-- is released, exact same Chf 2 .-- piece as well !

Yes you do. When you take the trolley back and stick the chain thing back in your coin comes back out again.

As Anjela says a UK 2 p piece ( or a 10p) work in all the trollies here ( airport, supermarket etc).

And there are lots of airports that require a coin to get a trolley, Geneva is not unique in this.

If OP is already getting upset by Switzerland when landing, I'm expecting a whole set of complaints soon!

let's see.

I still don't get it.
No one will steal a big trolley. As if the trolley will fit in a car?
This is so absurd. Only in Switzerland.

Take it you haven't been into a supermarket parking/airport or whatever where they do not have the system...... It is not about stealing the trolley it is about returning it to the correct spot instead of leaving it into the car parked next to you.

Really not that hard to understand

Re: Baggage trolley in Geneva airport

some airports around the world you do not get the coin back, some you do. If I need a trolley, then I am happy to pay, as on occasion I have needed a trolley but none to be found. I recall in Dallas Airport USA, that they have some really weird zone system, that you had to leave the trolley when you left some coloured zone to enter another zone!

I get more angry when somewhere foreign and have to pay for toilet and do not have that coin. Years ago from the continent to England, had to change trains and there was a charge for the toilet, I am English, I thought it was difficult enought for me, how would the non English cope?

Re: Baggage trolley in Geneva airport

Some of the trolleys in the stores have two different sized slots for either a 1 or 2 franc coin. The 1 franc slot also fits a 1 euro coin, which is good to know.

For the complete newbie, EUROPEAN TROLLEYS 101:

1. If there is only one slot in the little plastic device on the trolley handle, this is for a 2 franc coin.

2. Slide your coin forcefully into the slot in the front of the little plastic device on the trolley handle.

3. You will see a metal key attached to a chain coming out of the back of this plastic device. If you follow the chain, you will see that it is connected to the trolley IN FRONT OF YOURS. Once you have inserted your 2 franc coin in the front of the plastic housing on the handle of your trolley, (with authority), the metal key in the back will pop out a little bit.

4. Give a tug on this metal key and it will come out completely and your trolley will no longer be attached to the one in front of it.

5. When you are finished with your trolley, roll it up behind the others, (tightly and with authority). NOTE: Oftentimes there are rows of differently shaped trolleys, like at Hornbach, for example. Make sure to return your trolley to a row of trolleys EXACTLY like your trolley.

6. Place the metal key from THE TROLLEY IN FRONT OF YOURS into the key slot in the back of the little plastic device ON YOUR TROLLEY, (with authority).

7. This action will push your 2 franc coin out of the front of the plastic device on your trolley. Grasp firmly and retrieve.

Voila How To Use A Trolley/Buggy/Cart in Europe. I think this should be a sticky.

Though it would be kinda understandable if OP was, say, american - with unskilled labor so cheap there they have baggers whos job includes returning the cart. Gotta do that yourself now.

Re: Baggage trolley in Geneva airport

I do wonder where OP comes from- as most countries have trolleys that require a coin these days, both airports and supermarkets. The local area used to be littered with trolleys, as people would take them to the local airport hôtels or their home in the Grand Sac. etc area, and leave them there.

Not seen a Coop, or indeed any supermarket either in Switzerland, France or the UK where you don't have to have a coin for the trolley.

But not too much authority because point 7 will become invalid as the coin will shoot out at great speed and roll underneath the long line of trollies in front if you.

This results in one of the following:

A. If you are tight then you scrabble around on the floor very un gracefully until you get it back
Or
B. you leave in it's unreadable position and spend the rest of the day fuming at the injustice of the trolley system

There is even the (optional) third possibility which is to post a complaint on here about the ridiculous trolley system in Switzerland and how such a thing would never happen in ( insert name if home country here).

Ok, this is flat out not true. First of all, the checker/cashier in the grocery store who bags your groceries is not the person who retrieves the carts from the parking lot.

More importantly, the largest coin in America in common circulation is the quarter, which is 25 cents. 25 cents is not enough of an incentive to make people bring a cart back, unlike a 2 franc coin which is worth more than 2 American dollars. Therefore, if you instituted this system in America, you would still have carts scattered hither and yon spread over our vast parking lots. You would still have to pay a "cart guy/girl" to go out and retrieve them.

Unless and until a 1 or 2 dollar coin becomes common currency in America, people are going to continue to "park" their trolleys right next to their cars. Personally, I always return my carts in America to their little abri, but that is just because I am completely Swissified.
