Honestly! The things people steal

During the winter we put down rubber doormats cut to fit the steps on the outdoor staircase that leads to our front door to help with snow and ice. Was debating taking them up at the end of March, but decided to wait until we came back from our holiday. Got back yesterday evening, walked up to the staircase and what do you know? The bottom three rubber mats were missing. Can't think why anyone would want to steal them to start with, but really can't they afford a few francs to buy their own?

It's been incredibly windy whilst you've been away.

Your neighbour, I expect he decided the mats were encroaching on 'his' driveway/right-of-way somehow.

I bet it was the wind. Our garden shed blew over.

Re: Honestly! The things people steal

Stairs are sheltered from the north by the house and from the west and south by the staircase concrete walls so I doubt it was the wind. Only if it came from the east over the top of our neighbour's house and then plunged straight down to the ground would it be even remotely possible.

Anjela - yes, that's the more likely explanation. Unfortunately, no proof so can't take him to task over it.

Was very windy in the UK for our first few days there too. I had a job to get out of the car at our overnight hotel in Calais as the wind kept pushing the door closed again before I could get out.

Re: Honestly! The things people steal

It doesn't matter from which direction the wind comes - when it's strong and meets obstacles, it swirls in all directions .... twisting like a mini tornado and rebounding of walls in opposite direction - even in sheltered locations.

Pound for a penny they'll turn up a distance away, or will have been recovered by a neighbour.

Re: Honestly! The things people steal

It could be worth asking neighbours if they have spotted them as you suspect they may have blown away. That would give them the opportunity to return them without any problems if they did happen to take them

Referencing my post (#3), MFS has already had a nasty run-in with her neighbour.... if he has found the mats he is very, very, unlikely to admit it, let alone return them!
Holding them to ransom, now that's a possibilty.....

There is always a remote possibility that somebody recycled them thinking they were doing a favour to the neighbour

Can't wait to hear the end of it, though I rather support the idea that they were blown away.

Somebody keeps stealing the bulb from the light outside my apartment.
Anybody know where you can get a bulb with a built-in alarm?

Of course it ruddy well was... I loath this iPad and it's auto-correct sometimes. I swear it sneaks stuff in after I've double checked the spelling and pressed 'post'.

The police have powder to mark bank notes that can't be removed from the hand that grabs them, may work with light bulbs as well. One such color is called Oxin. Maybe try to get that, or ask police for similar - having the hands marked for multiple days may be deterrent enough.

I did coat the last LED bulb with a harmless spray car grease that left the bulb feeling very sticky but it still went.
