Rude Police (some) Attitude

Police Control Tram 2 from Kappeli to Banhof Wiedikon

So apparently, it seems a police was trailing Tram 2 till the next stop to fish me out. Headphones in me ears, African music booming while I am flirting on a gay chat app, sexy guys in full picture display. I neither saw nor heard them speak to me... Lady touched me and I freaked out "woah"... 3 policemen ( 2 go to my gym) & 1 beautiful blond lady smiling from ear to ear

Me: How can I help you? (My "stupid" polite English gentleman self)

Police Lady: Alles Klar

Me: All good thanks and yourself? (I watched the other 3 men triangulate me, it is an interrogation tactic, I am used to. I don't panic but focus on this beautiful blond lady police.

Police Lady: Ja, auch bei uns... Kannst du bitte Ousere (swiss german... Yak) kommen

We stepped out of the tram. The policemen were not feeling amused. Deep within me, I was laughing my ass off, two of them go to the same gym with me. What are they going to say to me when next they see me?

Police guy: Hey, where do you come from?

Me: The gym

Police guy: No, I mean contri (English level could be A2/1)

Me: ah, (named my country), why something Happened?

Police guy: Where do u stay?

Me: Seebanhstrasse, why?

Police guy: You stay alone... (really)!

Me: Yes. u looking for anyone ( At this point, I was just being rude)

Policeguy No 2: no, but you resemble a guy we looking for... Shows to me a picture

Ok here is were i freaked out... Really, if this is to whom I looked like, this is an insult. The guy on the picture is darker than night. I do not know if that pic was photoshopped but really? I felt pissed beyond my Ego. I used to be mistaken for Didier Drogba, R.Kelly or P. Diddy (Sean Combs) but not this type of guy on the picture.

Me: Sir, do you think I look like him?

Policeguy 2: You guys look all the same... ( You guys? All the same? I was boiling but I kept my calm)

(Then a call comes via their radio).... he turns to me and says...ok ok Ok ok sorry to disturb you. They jump into their big ass Van and drove off. No good byes or thanks for your cooperation....NADA

What is this issue with "you look like someone we are looking for?" or "You guys look all the same"

Instantly, I thought about all the many times I was stopped in Zurich. I can honestly say, out of 15-20 times, more than 5 times I was told I looked like someone they were looking for, and often some policemen said "We blacks look the same"... I remember in 2009 I was living around Limmatplatz. During winter, on my way to school, I was stopped 3 bloody times in a period of 15 mins and asked the same questions. I was so pissed that I sat by the road side, took out all the cards I had, even school library cards and gave them to the policeman, stating that I was miffed at them. Even some passer-bys and onlookers were on my side, with a lady affirming that she saw two different police groups pulled me over. 6-years later, I still remember that incident. I even offered to these policemen free African cultural differentiation classes for free because I was pissed off my the statement "You guys look all the same"

It's clearly your fault.

How dare you back squat more than your fellow gym pals.

It's mostly the cultural background / (lack of) experience with different phenotypes.

Solution? Broadened horizon.

I feel for you, but try not to take it personally.

Also some people are better with "faces" than others - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosopagnosia; no comment as to whether this is a criterion for being employed by the police

Disclaimer: Because I know that I sit in the glass house (prosopagnosia, phenotypes), I prefer to not throw stones (or holler racism).

To be honest when I first came here I found some Girls and Guys look really the same here when they are all covered up.
The girls hardly use make-ups and have strong chin and the guys have such a baby skin lol

you gays all look the same. What was the question again?

on a serious note, I know a guy with a white Swiss mum and African dad who just gave up here, it was constant. But I enjoyed your funny recollection.....I'd have mentioned the gym more to the two guys. Maybe they didn't recognise you? LOL

Well, as the 'beautiful blonde lady was smiling from ear to ear' and one of the men asked if you 'lived alone'..... is it just a possibility that one of them was looking for an excuse to find out your address with the intention to ask you out on a date later?
Now, whether it would be one of the men, or the blonde, I leave up to you!!!!

Re: Rude Police (some) Attitude

The attitude of some of the police here is pretty awful- and I would have been so annoyed too at the 'you guys all look the same' and their way of questioning you. There is racism in UK police too- but they would never dare say things like that, and they do get proper training on how to deal with people from all backgrounds. UK police are trained to diffuse situations- whereas here they will often goad and press all the buttons to try and get a reaction and get youngsters into trouble (same in France btw).

On Saturday, I was selling waffles with friends in front of our Migros, for a school in Benin that our group supports- and as 2 policemen walked by, I said 'don't forget your waffles, it's all in a good cause' they came and bought 2 and when they realised what the funds were for just said 'oh no, you'll bring even more asylum seekers!' - we just could not believe our ears (our assoc has built proper classrooms with electricity and eco toilets, and provides books and equipment)

Re: Rude Police (some) Attitude

And you're not even living in the former East Germany: when we lived there for two years, our son was in the local primary school and the PE teacher as a warm up got them to play "Wer hat Angst vom Schwarzmann"!!
And as there was not a single black pupil in the school (actually, in the whole town!), the teacher picked a girl who was half Italian, with slightly olive skin, telling her: "You'll have to do, you're the only coloured pupil we've got"!

Political correctness is often decried, but this was clearly a case where some strong PC education was needed, as for your police officers!

Nope. I've heard much worse from British police - at a meeting with the local social services' asylum team, no less!

A twat with a uniform and an attitude problem is a twat with a uniform and an attitude problem whether he's speaking with a Zurich or a Leicester accent. Unfortunately, there's too many of them everywhere.
