Nobody I know says "gesundheit", they all say "salute".

One for the geeks! Did you know that the origin of "Atchoo" (with the "t" accentuated in U.K.English) precisely comes from the French "A tes souhaits". A derivative from the good old Anglo-Norman days when a sneeze could indeed wipe out a whole population!

It's kept pretty much under wraps, but Switzerland has a big coke problem; and due to competition, the price has fallen, so, many more people have started using the real thing, resulting in there being many new coke virgins and novices trying it out.

Unfortunately, some are just so inexperienced and are not seeking usage advice, that I've heard a few are even putting it up their noses - which must be irritating ...... for everyone.

Re: Gesundheit!

Well I think the op has a point to a certain extend. When I sneeze I do it as discreetly as possible and then people yell "Gesundheit" just to make sure everybody notices it which I find really annoying tbh. Just imagine me suffering from hayfever sneezing my way around work all day and my colleagues keep pointing it out.........

And I don't know why people have to say "en guete" when you are just having an apple and find that equally annoying, how am I going to say "thank you" with my mouth full?

Re: Gesundheit!

It is just being polite, telling ''en gute'' when people buy food, or has sth on plate, doesnt matter when you want to eat

Whereas Gesundheit comes from the region of Gesund well known for its mountainous terrain, a.k.a the Heights of Gesund or Gesund Heights!

"Atchoo" is what "Hatschi" is in German. In Japanese, "hachi" (はち) means "eight," but with different spelling but practically identical pronunciation, it also means "pot" (鉢; flowerpot = 植木鉢) and "bee" (蜂)

So, most likely, it came into German as a synonym for hayfever, imported by all those Japanese tourists that do the Titlis-and-Jungfraujoch thing topped off with a cheese fondue in sweltering July heat in Interlaken. I mean, "eight bees around a flowerpot" contains so many hachis that it must sound like a major sneezing spell.

Re: Gesundheit!

Good thing the forum police were snoozing! (That's for you, Mr. "Have you managed to search correctly for this? There is a thread already on that!" Yes, that's you Assassin) I had the exact same question a few months back! Glad I'm not the only one who wonders! I love this topic.

Achoo - Gesundheit?

Is it around you this typically happens? Change your perfume/aftershave.

Actually, this is happening a lot to me by phone. Someone calls me, then starts sneezing down the phone.

Cold callers, I hate them!
I get the HIAO name now...

Nor do I ever hear them say it more than 4-5 times, because at that point, they say "Aye, yay, yay!"

Re: Gesundheit!

Its like they get this compulsion where they must say "gesundheit", even if someone is across the other side of the room or in another office, they will yell it out! One time someone down the end of the office sneezed, followed by an echo of about 10 gesundheits that traveled down the room haha.
It's called humor, expressed by over-emphasizing. You might call it "Insiderwitz" as obviously you don't get it. Sometimes the sneezer will YELL his merci, which may be answered by a knowing grin, or by some seemingly rude remark ("gits endli ruä do") if the two are on (very) friendly terms.

Quote:
The person who sneezes then always responds with "merci". The funny thing is, because I never say "gesundheit" some swiss will still say "merci" out of habit without even realising that I didn't say "gesundheit"!
Google "Wink mit dem Zaunpfahl"

Quote:
Some swiss even consider you to be rude if you don't say "gesundheit"
Spot on. Rules on un/politeness in other countries are completely irrelevant.

Quote:
While on the subject of gesundheit, I also noticed that "en gute!" is used far too much here.
Sorry to pop your bubble, but it's not up to you to decide what is considered polite here.

Quote:
One time I bought a frozen pizza at the supermarket and the woman at the checkout said "en gute!".
You just missed an opportunitiy for a nice flirt, perhaps more.

The funny/sad thing is, you do realize the differences but appear completely unwilling to adapt. I would be very much surprised if you had no problems finding friends among the locals, which probably includes the other sex (or whatever tickles your fancy).
