Why such aggressive drivers?

Why is everyone in such a hurry. Seems like many drivers ride right on the back bumper most of the time. I had my turn signal on waiting to turn left with on coming traffic and the car behind me just beeped and beeped at me to go. Really! Don't understand the mentality of some here in Switzerland.

Tooting of the horn in Switzerland is a rare occurence - the Swiss consider it aggressive. It was probably a dirty filthy auslander who has no idea how happy they should be living in Switzerland.

Re: Why such aggressive drivers?

A turn signal doesn't mean much I guess. I want to believe that they really weren't having a good day, but at the time I thought some not so kind thoughts to really honest. Just wasn't a need to beep the horn since I was following the rules of the road. Having a sense of patience seems to escape some.

Re: Why such aggressive drivers?

Being from the midwest has nothing to do with this and nor does it being a women. I just don't understand being aggressive in this situation for no reason at all-other than being a jerk. Just wanted to know if this is a "normal" that I need to get use to here in Switzerland.

No, it's not the rule here but you'll encounter this behaviour from time to time. Very rarely though. It's not that bad, no need to be so worried.

Really - not worried about it. I think my question has gotten lost: Is aggressive driving more of a normal here. I seem to see more 'rear bumper drivers' than what I am use to.

Difficult to understand, unless it was down to a different perspective of how much gap you needed to perform your manouevre. Not suggesting that it was so, but if someone sat there for five minutes waiting for a gap large enough to get an ocean liner through then I'd probably be minded to give them a beep too.

As for your first question: they're not necessarily "in a hurry", but we've all seen how people vent their frustrations when driving, and this was probably just that. Do bear in mind though, that for many drivers the idea of minimising journey time and avoiding delays is so entrenched it becomes an occupation in itself, and in that mindset anyone driving too slowly is an obstacle in their way.

And it's certainly no more or less prevalent here in CH than in the UK, France or Germany, and most other countries as well.

Oh, with that you have to get used (I'm afraid it's not a rare occurrence and it's not the dirty auslanders who're the culprits). I thought you were worried because of the horn honking.

Yes, except in Bern.
The main issue here is, that there is a traffic light every 50 meters or so which aren't necessarily sychronised.

Re: Why such aggressive drivers?

My experience of driving in the US is you can pull off manouvres that in Europe (in general) would get you a good honking*

I am wondering whether this has anything to do with the right to carry arms? You hear horns in New York - but not in Georgia.

**nope that didn't help

Re: Why such aggressive drivers?

I have been driving for a long time- never had a ticket in my life. Not a slow drive nor am I an aggressive drive. I am a good driver. Being new to Switzerland, was just asking if driving habits are different here. Obviously, seems that comments that are not all that are helpful are allowed. Appreciate the ones that are helpful in learning the ways here and adjusting.

Anything goes here, as long as it's within the posting guidelines, i.e. not abusive or overtly trolling.

Just like the honking drivers, you shouldn't take some EF posts (and some specific posters) too seriously. They're meant in fun, and getting annoyed by them will just make you look intolerant and tetchy.

Thank you for the advice. I am open to the thought and am not intolerant. Just wanted to understand. I will keep this in mind during my post.

From my experience, horn honking is quite rare.

However, I have encountered quite a few people driving right up my ass! At least once a month I'd say. To me that's not aggressive, it's just bad driving not to mention dangerous.

It used to drive me mad at first but following quite a few confrontations, I'm trying to chill out and get used to those idiots.

Re: Why such aggressive drivers?

My experience is that relative to US you will find cars on your bumper more often and if you dare hesitate at a traffic light, a horn will likely blow (maybe more Auslanders here?). And by hesitate, I mean that if you are not absolutely prepared to go during the yellow (and maybe even moving slightly), you are hesitating! It's sort of like the start signal at the race track.

On the other hand, I am continually and happily surprised at the sense of equity in allowing cars to merge into traffic at intersections. In the US, if you were on a side street with only a yield sign and traffic was heavy on the main street, you could sit there "forever". Here an alternating arrangement seems to be established very routinely. It really helps traffic move freely for all.

Tailgating is a common practice here indeed. And if you try to keep the proper distance it's like an open invitation for...idiots. (I'm sure they're convinced it's a slow driver who doesn't mind )

Re: Why such aggressive drivers?

The one thing I find humorous are those drivers who, on back roads, come barrelling up behind you along the straights and drop a dozen car lengths back through the corners because they have absolutely no idea how to drive a corner with any pace.

If you you are from the mid-west, you will find divers here aggressive.

If you are form the north-east, you won't.

And if you are from Italy, you'll be wondering if all the drivers here are from the mid-west.

Two points to Tom I believe!

Having driven in the midwest on multiple occasions I can fully understand his logic. OP - wait til you go to Italy.
