Ricardo location map wrong :(

I just bought a trampoline off Ricardo that's only half an hour drive for me, near Walenstadt.

Except it isn't - the Ricardo map on the auction page is b****cks.

I now know that 3239 Gals is near Bern, way too far to justify driving for this. They even manage to get it right on the receipt page.

Re: Ricardo location map wrong :(

It looks like an error in google maps. I could reproduce it
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ha...10eb1e1fa08636

Probably because there is a galerschstrasse 3239 in Flums

It's in canton Bern but it's actually much nearer to Neuchatel than it is to Bern which makes it even further away from you.

Will see what Ricardo say. I've told them to cancel my offer, it's a shame for the seller though.

Re: Ricardo location map wrong :(

Well looky, that's Google Maps, not Ricardo, and I assume such locations are automatically searched and marked by Google.

There is a place named Gals exactly where shown on that Google Map. You won't find the name, though, but you can find it on the Swiss topo maps. It's just a bunch of little farms.

Google Maps is full of mistakes. Some of them are funny, others are downright dangerous. They are generated by the same company that is trying to convince mankind that cars can find their way on their own. Don't expect too much.

I never trust a computer in any form, including GPS devices. I'm an old sailor with a lot of experience with highly sophisticated electronic gimmickry. Among avid boaters, there is a special term for that kind of devices: CACG , which stands for Computer Aided Collision Generators.

Re: Ricardo location map wrong :(

All fair points except the "it's Google not Ricardo".

If someone puts a map on their site they should test it. I never accept "it was the subcontractor not us" as an excuse, but it's far to often used.

They do know the full address of the seller, so they're capable of providing a proper map location and do so on the full receipt. They could also get PLZ centre points from Die Post if they want to partially anonymise, but just passing in the PLZ to Google is lazy if as appears it doesn't work, and I wouldn't employ that developer.

I'm afraid if everything had to be verified manually, companies like Ricardo, eBay etc. would have to file for bankruptcy within months. Such firms can be profitable only because practically everything is fully computerized. Human staff is just way too expensive.

And besides that, you can test such a map gimmick ten thousand times without a problem. You just were the victim of the 10,001st time.

I guess there is a passage somewhere in Ricardo's fine print that says that they cannot be held responsible for such mistakes.

Thanks, but I think I'll let Ricardo sort it out - I shudder to think what it would cost in postage.

I'm not sure I agree about the testing, but each to their own.

I don't expect them to be responsible as such, in terms of some sort of penalty, genuine mistakes do happen - as long as they amicably sort it out, which should be easy enough simply by cancelling my offer and not charging the seller.

I could probably walk there to pick it up. Shame I'm not in the market for a trampoline.

to be honest, I don't think you have a chance as both postal code and city were mentioned in the ad.

complaining that it is displayed differently on the map makes you look a bit like these

Re: Ricardo location map wrong :(

I see the funny side, but I don't agree they aren't responsible - when posting an advert, all of the document forms part of the contract, including the location map.

If it's inconsistent then the amicable solution is to cancel the deal; I'll take responsibility for my part of it by not insisting they deliver it to the advertised map location, the seller doesn't insist I collect from Bern, and Ricardo doesn't make a profit from their error.

I'm pretty hopeful apart from the last part, I suspect as Captain Greybeard said Ricardo won't do proper customer service as it's too expensive.

Anyway, I haven't heard from either the seller or Ricardo.

Maybe Google Maps is too ambitious a project, but it is a valuable tool in general (IMHO), however, common sense must prevail. What I noticed is the ever confirmed quote - never underestimate the stupidity of general public.

Postal code 32XY? -- Bern area!

Print out or save this handy map:

postcode numbers increase along train or postauto routes (alltough some of this routes no longer exists) That's how they sorted and distributed the mail back in the old days.

Re: Ricardo location map wrong :(

Hi, i bought something in Ricardo last week. The offer clearly stated: Free delivery or pick up

When we contacted the seller he seemed surprise to know that the option "free delivery" was showing up.

After contacting Ricardo, they did admit it was a technical issue and asked us to find a solution by ourselves (....) it was too far for us to drive so in the end the transaction had to be cancelled.

A bit disappointing though as it was a mistake by Ricardo and they did not offer any solution, besides to cancel the transaction.

What you do is contact the Seller, explain the problem too far for you to pick up and ask Seller to cancel the transaction.

If Seller agrees, then you may get a message from Ricardo asking if you agree to the cancellation, that you should agree, as then the Seller will not get charged selling fees, although seller may have to pay the listing fees, as well as the relisting fee

Yes, hoping that works out.

I've heard from Ricardo and as expected they deny all responsibility, but nothing from the seller yet.

Re: Ricardo location map wrong :(

Update - guy from Ricardo has actually investigated and has sent several emails on the subject, good effort Ricardo

Seller - has realised he actually had an incorrect postcode entered (should have been 3238) and has changed it without any response to my email

So map now works (which the Ricardo guy claimed, rightly but without realising the subterfuge), but chance of amicable solution seems low!

Since the seller isn't playing fair, in my (unbiased ) view Ricardo should definitely cancel the sale.

Who is at fault?
Google? No.

You? Yes, for blindly trusting Google and applying some common sense about the Swiss postal code system.

Ricardo? Yes, for not checking for a valid postal code. And blindly trusting Google, instead of using post code area center coordinates.
http://www.post.ch/db/owa/pv_plz_pac...=&p_tipo=luogo

Seller? Yes, for entering a wrong postal code. On the other hand there is only one Gals.
