Unexplainable :attempted mugging/physical intimidation at bahnhofquai tramstop

hi
Unfortunately experienced something very very strange at Bahnhofquai tramstop last evening.
we were a group of 4 people and a four year old , waiting for our tram, when suddenly a couple of guys sided up to us and stood within half a feet of us, staring into our faces, peering into the baby s pram, absolutely silent. When asked why, the answer was, its a free country, they could stand where they wanted. They said they were swiss and they did not understand people who spoke the rubbish english language, etc etc.
they actually followed us to the tram, then hit the closing door.
Nasty experience.
Did a quick scan , no official around, no police.
the problem with a situation like this is trying to judge the intention of these people.
Are they trying to snatch something, are they just on an irrelevant trip, are they trying to be racist? what?
Surprised and very disappointed to experience something like this in Zurich .

Re: Unexplainable :attempted mugging/physical intimidation at bahnhofquai tramstop

Drugged up? Trying to provide something to their 'mates'?
Sounds completely random to me, but the trams have CCTV and the main police station is in central Zurich.... You could report it and they might take it seriously enough to check the CCTV footage...

i was on a tram with a friend and this random guy who had probably had a fair bit of alcohol abused her in a sexual way. We moved ourselves down to the far end of the tram and were deciding what to do next.... Two stops later three police officers boarded the tram and removed the guy...

In this case, your nearest 'help' would be the tram driver... Get yourself to the front of the tram and let the driver know there is a problem...

In our case, we were on the back section of a tram with two separate sections, but it was quite obvious to us that someone had seen what happened and called the police in...and they usually are not far away... Police presence in Zurich from my experience is very high...

My guess would be, that it was a racial 'Switzerland for the Swiss' point that they were crudely making.
Neanderthals, on the far right of the political spectrum, down from some small inter-bred mountain village, for the weekend.

Unfortunately, if you were not verbally or physically threatened or a abused, there's probably little that can be done.

Such incidents, thankfully, are still less common, than in other lands.

Thats what we thought as well , u know! There's no obvious threat, but its definitely very very creepy, and that is the whole intent, isn't it? to creep one out!
All sorts inhabit our world, i guess.Just wanted to know whether it makes sense to report it, so talked about it.
Thanks so much !

We were playing in the little park in the zurich old town and there was another couple there with a small child. The dad was covered in neo-nazi type tattoos and was english. ... We just kept smiling and being friendly...but we did feel quite uncomfortable...and we're anglo-saxon...

Not very pleasant at all!! Poor you. Most likely a one off situation by a bunch of drunks/idiots. Hoping it never happens to you again. I think you could definately say it was intimidation / anti social behaviour - especially as it was several guys and there are some laws regarding this.
Hard to know what to do in situations like this as you don't want to escalate it - specially with an infant involved. Definately report it
Have a lovely weekend.

Why, because of the tattoos or the English.

I honestly do not understand the reason of your post !

Have to agree with this... bizarre post from swisspea if the family were just sitting there and doing no harm.

PS: Neo-nazi tattoos? Doubt it. Sounds like an extreme case of judgementalitis.

If by "neo-nazi type tatoos" you're referring to something similar to the Swastika then it's often used by people into certain musical subcultures. However in that context the symbolism has little to do with the Nazis, but more to do with what the Swastika represented before it was "stolen". Here's a link that explains the history.

I know a lot of people that are fairly well inked, and quite frankly they are some of the nicest and most trustworthy people I know. If you lived through a time where a tattoo may well have meant that somebody is a bit leary then I can possibly understand your predjudice. However things have changed. Given the popularity of tattoos these days I think that you might want to consider trying to put that prejudice to the side, as you'll be dismissing people that are actually really good people.

So if I fancy punching someone and being able to claim self defence, I just need to take a pram to Bahnhofquai. Roughly what time was it?

...to achieve, what? Lose time and nerves at a police station and having a fair chance to meet a non-sympathetic, bored office clerk? She might get even more disappointed.
I'd rather take nickatbasel for a walk, in that area.

I don't see the attempted mugging but there definitely was some physical intimidation going on. There are idiots everywhere and you've just met some. I would be happy to join Nick as well and give those "dumme Cheibe" an earful.

Re: Unexplainable :attempted mugging/physical intimidation at bahnhofquai tramstop

There probably isn't a lot the police can do - but I think you should still report it. It will go on their stats and hopefully would influence their strategy in where to have the heaviest patrol presence.

If they are being thorough - and you can remember what the perps looked like, maybe they will have you go through a photo album of people known to them. A friend who had money stolen by distraction theft on the street was asked to do the same and she managed to pick out someone the cops had been keeping tabs on. I can't remember if it resulted in an arrest.

Rgds,
Nick
