Gym Auto-renewal

Hi,

Myself and my wife had joined Discountfit Gym on 15th June 2014.

We hardly used the gym during the year. Still, I had been paying the monthly dues to comply with the contract. The contract was for a year.

On 1st June 2015, I gave notice to the gym that we would like to cancel the contracts.

However, I got a reply that I had to inform 1 month before the expiry of the current contract. I have been trying to explain them that I would not be using their services and I was not aware of the 1 month clause.

The gym has been quite ruthless till now. I have almost begged them to cancel the contract but they would not budge.

Is there any way I can get out of the contract without costing me another year of gym fees?

Regards
Manoj

Re: Gym Auto-renewal

1 (or 3) full months notice by registered letter is pretty common.

Legally, if that's what your contact says then you've no chance. You could try appealing to their better nature, but gyms are notoriously fastidious about this. It seems to be a large part of their business plan. If you search EF, you'll see it catches out a lot of people.

Send your cancellation letter for the end of your new contracted period now before you forget again.

Re: Gym Auto-renewal

On another thread I mentioned that with the Gym contract in Bern I crossed out the renewal clause.

They said that was unacceptable. I walked out. 15 minutes later they called me back and agreed to no automatic renewal clause.

Try it out, there is fierce competition in the branch, and the customer is king.

Re: Gym Auto-renewal

ask to speak to the GM directly. I used to work for one of these. Most of the time we would let people off the hook with simply paying for 1 more month. (after the 1 year contract)

Ouch, thats a tough bite. Happened to me a couple years ago and I had my membership 1 extra year than planned...never used it that whole year.
