The men in my family are totally convinced that all new drivers (at least in the French-speaking part of the world) are taught to line the middle of their car up with the convienient white line some kind soul has painted down the middle of the road for that very purpose!
They'd have a tough time here as most of the normal roads have no lines at all!

Re: Stay on YOUR side of the road ....

Most tunnels have police operated video cameras, pointing into the tunnel.
I would place charges against "People unknown" and hope the traffic police can read their licensue number.
Failing to stop, even in canton Valais, is a seriious offence, and why should you pay the first Fr 200 when the other driveri is at fault?

Just spent a week in the Alps, in Leukerbad, and visited several areas in the Upper Valais... and were amazed by the number of people who take bends on the wrong side of the road! On the way to Saas-Fee, some idiot driving a motor-home came out of a tunnel coming down from Saas completely over the line and completely smashed our right-side mirror - and could have been a lot worse if OH was not keeping way off the middle line. Grrr...
the only one who hit us, but one of so many driving right over the line- both Swiss and foreign plates!

Later edit : We have a right hand drive Discovery, it was our brother-in-law who nearly 'got it' ... and he was really shaken, poor thing. The motorhome came out of the tunnel in middle of the road, and it all happened so fast- no time to even notice if it was Swiss or foreign - s/he knew full well they had hit us hard- but didn't stop. Sorry, but I hope they suffered significant damage!

Right-side mirror, I'm still trying to work this out...

Re: Stay on YOUR side of the road ....

... ooops not surprising- strange nobody else (or myself for that matter) picked this up earlier Of course it was the left side mirror of a right hand drive vehicle! I was sitting as passenger in the rear on right side- and I can assure you OH was way off the line by about 30cm- confirmed by sil who nearly got hit!

OH going to Insurance this morning to ask for advice and see how to proceed- we have full casco so not sure what the franchise is.

Maybe both drivers thought they were in England?

(Using the terms 'nearside' and 'offside' is always best ...... because most people don't have a clue)

Re: Stay on YOUR side of the road ....

... not OH lol. He has been driving the same right hand car for 8 years, 6+ in Swiss and French tortuous and narrow mountain road (this one was not narrow btw)- so I think he's got the width of his car well sussed! He was actually very careful as for the whole week- VS plated cars had been driving downhill straight at us cutting corners downhill even when full aware we were approaching- which we found astounding! I mean, I do cut corners when I know the road well and there is clearly no other cars approaching- but not if a car is approaching bend from t'other side!!!

Re: Stay on YOUR side of the road ....

Ever gone up a mountain pass like the Susten from Italy to CH when the italians come back after lunch at the top... and they come right at you in the middle on every bend and try and push you off the mountain...

OH went to see our friendly Mobilière assessor and is said just get it done and send the bill- no franchise.

I did the same journey from Visp to Saas-Fee...but with the postal bus; I can assure you that nobody was driving over the line, they knew who would have incurred the damage!

Re: Stay on YOUR side of the road ....

If the upcoming corner was a right-hand hairpin then it is understandable that the motorhome driver may have adopted a more central road position - especially if the vehicle had a longer than average wheelbase.

That doesn't stop it being their fault.

The same is true from uphill left-hand hairpins - hug the right side of the road, turn in agressively towards the apex, nail the throttle and apply a dab of oppo'

It was an accident. There is no need for that
I can't agree with that. If it is truly an accident, you do the right thing: you stop and ascertain that nobody got hurt.

They were clearing up all the tents and litter when we got there. I've got a magazine I picked up when there- just put it in recycling- with lots of photos of different yoddling groups- are you on there? (do you want me to keep it and post, if you haven't got it?).
