Ok. Can you translate 'Namaste' to me please? Thank you.

What planet are YOU living on? Do you know the meaning of every greeting of every language?

Maybe you should try excusing people's ignorance and give them points for at least trying to be nice.

Re: A crappy day and possible racism

People constantly try to speak Russian to me (yeah, I get it - they are tryin' to be nice), whaaaambulaaance

I've also had Northern German thrown at me and Swedish.

I have really nice neigbors of Chinese origin who told me once that some local friends tried to be nice to them (in public) by mimicking Assian accent (as if there was a sole one) and saying Japanese is a beautiful language they once used to speak a little (they forgot my neighbors are actually Chinese). They smiled patiently.

What can you do? Shrug it off as a major cultural difference? The perception of "ignorance", "politness" and "tact" is very much culturally embedded. And, cultural horisons don't usually get broadened solely by 1st class Hotelplan or Kuomi experiences.

While it is great to share experience, it's not worth to get hurt over it, me thinks.

Oder?

Who said the people I was talking about were Swiss? I don't know if they were Swiss or not. 1/5 chance they weren't.

Anyway if someone said Namaste to me I'd definitely find it a bit ignorant.
When I'm out on a hike in the mountains here, if anyone passes and says "Grüß Gott", (mainly Germans or Austrians), I am so outraged, I usually push then down the nearest ravine.

Re: A crappy day and possible racism

Reminds me of a story when I was in Istanbul. A 50 something years old couple came to me and asked me if I spoke English. They were very impressed how good my English was and asked me where were all the Muslims.

I had a blank look in my face. The lady pointed around us and told me that she thought people in Istanbul were Muslims. Well yes, I said, these people are in majority Muslim.

She was expected to see women in tchadors and men dressed like in Afghanistan.

I think the point here wasn't so much the meaning of the word, but to whom it was addressed.

You expected random people in CH to know that your family's outfit didn't come from India, but from Pakistan?

Again, I think trying on a greeting they thought was coming from that part of the world could be thought of as sweet.

Do you see bad intentions everywhere?

I think the mob is taking what I said and making it into what they want me to have said.

All I said was that my Mum and Wife found it a bit condescending. They wore their traditional clothes because that's what they wear. They weren't wearing fancy dress and looking for attention. It was a nice day so they didn't have jackets on and found it a bit peculiar that every second person was coming up to them about what is their normal every day clothes. They just found it all a bit uncomfortable. I apologise on their behalf for those feelings which were clearly wrong according to EF.

There were no bad intentions. I never said there were any. All I said was they felt it a bit condescending and if someone says Namaste to me I'd find it a bit ignorant.

Very likely Racist, but of the self-inflicted kind.

An Asian friend kept ranting on and on about the racism of "the Swiss". I've spent days with her when she would pick out all kinds of negativity as proof of Swiss racism, yet I did not spot any real ones.

It turns out she herself had a negative view of Asians, including herself, and projected it as if it was coming from the Swiss when it was not. Such racism is often embedded and ingrained as self-hatred, and comes from loosely throwing around allegations of racism.

I do speak it and languages are great...but maaaaaan. Who has to be reminded it was the only "worthy" foreign language to learn apparently, for a few decades.

Namaste.

Namaste!

Well, it is assumed that if you come from that region you're either a native speaker or you must have learned it somehow. I didn't study Russian in school, but my parents, even some of my older cousins did.
And it's not only that - some people are quite cheeky...or silly, or drunk, or ignorant, or whatever. One time I was in a train in a country I will not name here - and there was one guy sitting next to us and grinning like a Cheshire cat at me and my friend..."Ruuuuuusky, huh? Huh?" When we said no he started to apologise profusely, which was even more ridiculous because we didn't really care, we were a bit like "wtf?" just because he was rude.
I'm curious if he would have stared and grinned like that at a German or French or whatever....."Germeeeeeen, huh? Huh?" Silly.

This is very true---although one can never really comment on what 'feelings' of persecution another has lived through, be it real or in their mind.

I grew up in as one of the only non-white in a fairly white-bred town, and really felt as an outsider and treated differently, I'm still at a lost of words when the only thing here people at work can talk about is how dark my skin is, or just the other day "Your skin is so dark, we should call you the Tunisian from now on!" Is it racism? Probably not, they're just making small talk jokes and I might still have some complexes because of my skin colour. I just have to HTFU! Too many people aren't anymore.
