Baggage Belt

I think this might be a universal problem but I might just vent here.

A baggage belt is for collecting baggage. It is not a meeting point, a treadmill nor a kid's climbing gym.

Why is it so complicated for people to step back, so that when the 200 people waiting for their bags see them, they can get their bags without having to force their way past a family, throw a kid off the baggage belt and pick up their bag without knocking out grandma Betty who's also stood by the belt despite the fact her son is there to get her bag anyway...

Please: if you're one of the people who crowds close, take a few steps back, and move in when you see your bag. When you see other people crowding, frown and complain to your travel partner loud enough so everyone else can get the message

Re: Baggage Belt

And if everyone could make sure they travel only with grey or black coloured suitcases, it will mean my brightly coloured luggage will stand out on the baggage belt so I know exactly when to leap forward.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Baggage Belt

Have you not realised, yet, that most people (ESPECIALLY Swiss) live in their own private bubble, oblivious of everything and anyone else around them ..... until of course, they insist on helping someone who DOESN,T need help.

If it's not a long flight, I try to eat spicy foods, eggs and baked beans, before I travel, so I've had a good brew on the plane and just ripe to drop a few by the barrage carousel.
However, it's all about timing and longer flights pose certain self-restraint challenges.

My pet hates are:

- the moving walkway (that takes shopping trolleys) between floors. Family A just arriving at the top, see Family B, just about to go down. A good time for kissy-kissies and a chat, right at the top, blocking both up and down with bodies and trolleys;

- the entrance foyer to my local Migros - about 5m long with sliding doors at each end and enough space, just, for two trolleys to pass. Woman just stops dead and starts fiddling with her phone, instead of going out where there's loads of space; woman X going out, sees woman Y coming in - again 3 kisses ritual and the Swiss long version of 'wie geht es dir?'

This problem is not restricted to Swiss, believe me. It is prevalent in just about any airport worldwide.

Also annoying when standing at the belt is someone who comes and plonks themselves directly in front of you...

A good way to make sure you have space to collect your luggage is to travel with golf bags. Take them off the belt horizontally, do a nice side-way manoeuvre and the place is all yours

Purely annecdotal, but I have found this issue to be worse in ZRH than any other Northen European airport

That what my mum did, some 8 years ago, when she came to visit us in the UK. It was the first time she was travelling on her own, and was so stressed that she just picked a black suitcase, which did not even look like hers .

My OH only found out, when he was hauling her (heavy) suitcase in our car, and noted that the name was not hers! There was a very unhappy person by the belt waiting for his suitcase to turn up.

In most airport, such bulky bags (golf bags, ski bags, buggies, etc.) are collected from the Bulky items belt

Right, but not in Berlin (tiny airport with minimal space at the belts) where it works like a treat!

Nor me it's like standing next to the belt will speed up the arrival of the suitcase, either that or everyone's short sighted.

It's annoying people stop it, stand 2m back from the belt so others can collect their luggage.

But this behavior is only reinforced if almost everyone does it. A small % of people who take this as the opportunity to stand in front of you discourages the behavior...doing it is counterproductive for you --so you move up.. and so it spreads.......

Maybe get a baggage trolley & place it next to the belt, then wait "downwind" for your bag? You can then see your bag arriving and slide it onto the trolley.

I think Luton airport has signs asking people to keep behind the yellow lines.
Of course nobody adheres to the notice. I just grab my bag and walk backwards, if they are in the way, then sod 'em.

I attach coloured strips to the baggage handles, nobody has taken my bag yet.

Re: Baggage Belt

Ahem , I do stand close to the baggage belt, but it is more of an evolutionary adaptation due to the following:
  • Not that tall, so can be a struggle trying to spot my case.
  • If you stand away and try to squeeze in to collect your case, people aren't very accommodating
  • Case is inevitably heavy, so needs some mental preparation (somehow offers of help are uncommon in Switzerland - I am told that no one offers unless you ask)
  • Preventing others from claiming my case (this has happened- although it is an uncommon colour, accessorised with ribbons)
  • (If Geneva) Very often the train leaves in 10/15 mins and I am not keen on spending another hour in the airport.

Having said that, I do make way for those needing to collect their bags and I doubt if you'll find me in your way.

Re: Baggage Belt

I'm very much British so I stand and complain loudly to my companion, followed by saying 'excuse me - can I get through, that's my bag' loudly whilst 'accidentally' bumping into as many people as possible, then swing my bag of the carousel before I 'accidentally' drop it on someone's foot.
Never makes a blind bit of difference, but makes me feel ten times better.

And why with the luggage trolleys next to the carousel too?

You clearly have not arrived at Krakow at 1030pm when Air Berlin, Ryanair and Lufthansa arrive at the same time....

I know frequent Flyers talk about "gate lice" but they have siblings down at the baggage belt.

Re: Baggage Belt

So to sum up this thread at the end of the page 1 stage:

- OP is fed up of people crowding around the baggage belt at the airport

- Some people think it is an exclusive phenomenon to Switzerland and the
Swiss

- Some people get uppity at anyone saying bad things about the Swiss

- Some people think they might not be Swiss

- Several posters point out the other airports in the world where similar phenomena occur

- The rest of the world - me included - couldn't give a monkeys

Is that about it?

Cheers,
Nick
