What is up with these strange Swiss people? lol

So far I lived in Canada, US, Brazil and South Africa and now in Switzerland (due to the services our company provides), however, I had my share with funny encounters in all of the countries previously to Switzerland, yet this here, beats the record.

Some examples. Erm... hard to find out where to start. Ok, here we go:

1. Restaurants open from 12:00-14:00, so I arrive at 13:15 and ask for lunch, the waitress stands there, looks at her watch, stands there and keeps looking at me. So after that strange greeting, I asked for the menu, she repeated what she just did. Then told her if the restaurant is open because I saw it was on their website, she then shook her head and started to argue that normal people, yes, normal people eat at 12:00 and not at that late.... ok, that is one. (I at that point burst out laughing, all the other Swiss looking at me very annoyed, and of course left).

2. In my evening strolls with my dog in the area I live in, I usually do the same route, but once I picked a different street and some random old lady comes out of the house and asks me if I live somewhere towards the place I am heading (which was down the road of the public street in this area that Swiss people here refer to as Millionenviertel....), so I asked back, who wants to know, the reply was "me", I then told her in my horrible german "it is nice to meet you me, I'm Roger, but it is very late and I have to keep going"... no idea what she was saying afterwards but I have never seen someone as confused and shocked as she... poor lady.

3. Another one with my dog. He pees on a random tree somewhere on state property and of course, some guy that kept already looking at me for weeks from his window each night, finally grew a pair to open the window and aggressively complain. I knew this was coming, and ignored him completely. The guy actually went as far to actually from this moment on exchange tree for his garden's bushes for my dog to pee on. So salty these people, jesus... not my fault they must have worked their whole lives hard to live in some cramped apartment with nothing better to do then playing retired police officer.

4. I take my son to launch to launch our self-built rocket. Of course some Swiss people arrived to look at the launch, I explained them kindly about the minimum distance to keep if they want to watch and they were really nice and waited about 15 mins for my son and me to prep the rocket to launch it (we waited for rain and the fire alerts to be removed by the government). Anyway, after almost 20 mins, we went to launch the rocket, but the rocket did not launch, happens a lot in model rocketry. So I dismantled it to troubleshoot, took me another 15 mins to find out the issue needs to be dealt with in my workstation at home. So I kindly told the other people that unfortunately not today, and they started shaking their heads, asking me if what I was doing was even legal and if it is not dangerous to do it around kids, etc....ok, I ignored them and my son and me left.

5. I remember the first day when I moved to my current house, had 2 container trucks, got authorization by the local community office for them etc, and three older Swiss men came on both days, kept looking inside the container, actually, physically stuck their heads in there. When I asked if I can help them, they started to argue about the space that I take (where nobody ever parks anyway up to this day), and they went to talk with the movers, truck driver (complaining), so I called the local community office to talk to those old men over my phone so they can piss off for once, and as I had the kind lady on the phone that was willing to talk to them, the old guys just waved me off, shook their heads and moved along....

6. I ordered Coop@home (as each time I go to the local coop here they sell stuff that expires next day, don't what I want, always the same story), so I order online, pay the extra delivery fees. Here it is the postal office that delivers the boxes, so each time I ordered, the postman complained to me why I don't go to coop as these boxes are heavy and interfere with his work... as if care, he should complain to his own boss and figure something out with coop I guess.

I can go on plenty, but what is it with these people here? Any expats have some interesting experiences to tell as well?

Anyway, I'm Raka, new to this forum (mainly because of some of the other threads I read). Looking forward to participate with you all from time to time.

Hiya Raka,

Don't worry, some day your peculiarities will wear off. For me, the beginning was like Green Acres.

Even my wife started to resemble Eva Gabor.

Have fun!

When you live in a place full of crowded perfection, you'll have to put up with self-created problems that the locals think up to keep their lives from boiling over with too much fun.

Re: What is up with these strange Swiss people? lol

Great first post - I am sure most newcomers have similar experiences.

I once had the guy at our local pool blow his whistle when I was swimming which made everyone look at me. He then went on to tell me I should not have taken my dress off near the pool ( I had my costume underneath as it is just over the road from my place) I should have taken my dress off in the cabine. Next day when I had my swim he was watching me, ready to pounce!!!
.
But don't worry - you will soon start to twitch your curtains, be ready to point out to someone when they have dropped anything, and have the police on speed dial for when you want to report something like washing your car/lawn mowing on a Sunday

Re: What is up with these strange Swiss people? lol

I would say heaps of people new to switzerland have had these things happen.

My first neighbour, as in both the husband and wife, were alcoholics. At 10am she would walk over to my back jard, drunk as a skunk, with a scotch in her hand and ask me for sex. Sex at 10am while I am feeding my little boy morning tea.

Omg I have to stop here. But there are heaps more if you are interested.

I have been living here for a while now. Again, if I could write about the good stuff I would probably have to write a novel, but isn't it more fun to write about the negative, and this complain section of the forum is hands down brilliant !!

Not really as you're doing the same as many new members, making their first post a complaining one. Why not write about the good stuff? There's a lot less posted on that here on EF.

Re: What is up with these strange Swiss people? lol

Great post .

Our neighbour live one floor above us bang at their balcony fence whe we grill/BBQ. Preaching things like how inconsiderate we are and how dangerous grill is, because it may cause cancer, etc. Really not a mood booster for a nice afternoon grill. Its not like we grill everyday though. Perhaps like 5-10 times a year! (Is that much?)

The lady even have this kind of logbook where she noted every single date and time we grill, wether we had guest or not, how many guest we had and if they are smoking or not.. I knew that since at one point we had enough and invite them to settle things up. She took out that d4mn little black note of her and start complaining. We were like . She never really complain to other neighbour who also grill/BBQ though.

So after that meeting, everytime we grill, OH need to call them 30 minutes in advance to remind them to close all their windows . We then grill far further from our own terrace toward the far corner of the garden. Other neighbours adviced us not to do such nonsense though. But we want peace.

One time, OH called the lady to inform her that we would grill, and she started to ask for how long, for how many people, etc. That is the time when we decide to just listen to other neighbours. Since then we ignored this particular neighbour and grill in peace.

Other neighbour (a husband and a wife in their late 60s) is totally 180 degree from the other one. They often invite me for dinner whenever OH went on business trip. They always invite me as "Strohwitwe". They are really nice neigbour..

I had a crazy female work colleague (about 10 years older than me) who would mention in casual conversation that she liked to watch porn and would email me long lists of "recommendations", usually at about 2am. She also told me she loved doing the washing as she liked to sit nude on the washing machine while it was doing the spin as it sometimes gave her orgasms. She even asked me if I'd like to come and watch. She also boasted that she was shagging the postman.

When I tried to explain to her that i wasn't open to this type of thing as I had an OH, she accused me of being boring, and later of being gay.
