In California, I was an Aussie ..... apparently (god forbid).

[however, Californians, also think that they're American, too]

"Where are you from?"
"The UK."
"Where?"
"Britain"
"Oh, England"

OK, I am from England, but as I also have Welsh, Scottish and Irish (and Russian) ancestry I think of myself as British rather than English.

normally followed up with
"Whereabouts because I went of holiday to Inverness/London/Oxford once?"

Re: Again... and again... and again...

A short conversation with a 25-year-old car mechanic in Valdosta, Georgia, USA a few years ago:

"So... you ain't from 'round here, are ya?"
"No, you're right there!"
"So... where y'all from?"
(Pause as I think how to answer that we had been living in London but are in the process of moving to Sydney, with a short driving holiday in the States on the way, and that my wife and I were from different countries...)
"... Australia."
".....................?"
"It's a long way from here."
"Oh. I ain't never bin outta South Georgia."

Valdosta is 17 miles from the Florida border. And he'd never bin outta South Georgia?!

I guess one day he could get really adventurous and travel all the way to Sydney or Melbourne ... (in Florida, of course: 239 or 281 miles, respectively. )

A couple weeks ago, while in Trieste, I was asked if I was from Milan.

Anyway, around here Geneva is viewed as being in 'Svizzera Interna' (Innerschweiz).

Anything south of Milan is southern Italy for most people here, though my wife thinks that anything south of Como is southern Italy.

And anything south of Rome is Africa.

Re: Again... and again... and again...

I'm surprised at Brits confusing Switzerland with Sweden. Folk I talked with before I came here seemed to know Switzerland quite well. (Except Basel) ; They knew of Interlaken, the charming vilage below the Jungfrau, Eiger and Matterhorn, just down the road from St. Moritz and Grindelwald.

You can't really blame them, coming from a country with one hill at most...

Perhaps a bit of a 'class divide' there? The first time I had that conversation was with the milkman- lovely friendly man but with a limited experience of the world, shall I say.
