Again and again in the UK - so what is it like in Sweden? Me: hmm I come for Switzerland. They: same thing isn't it. Me: no. OK then, can you speak Swedish? Me: no, I come from Switzerland. Oh ok, can you speak Swissih? Me: hmm no. They: why not if you come from there. And on, and on.
Haha I've had "can you speak Swiss yet"

Also when I posted a video of my littlest's first time coming home from chindsgi on his own, crossing the road (I secretly filmed him from the window!) of course attracted a lot of shock and curiosity; after I answered questions about safety and how normal it is here etc one of the comments was something like "I still wouldn't do it, not even in Lapland or wherever it is you live!" haha Lapland??

Youre from the UK right?
No, Im irish...
Same thing right?
"Where are you from?"
"Manchester, England"
*starts asking about London* or introduces me as "Pixie from London" I've been to London about five times, they probably know the city better than I do!

"Where are you from?"
"The UK."
"Where?"
"Britain"
"Oh, England"

OK, I am from England, but as I also have Welsh, Scottish and Irish (and Russian) ancestry I think of myself as British rather than English.
I was born in England but only 50% English ancestry, mostly other European countries I've always preferred to identify myself as European rather than British..

The more I think about it all the more bizarre it all seems anyway maybe I'll identify simply as Earth being!

The Sweden/Switzerland one seems to be quite common - my nephew now says "Aunty Lindsay lives in cheese" )

Re: Again... and again... and again...

Our local post office staff seem to get quite confused. It is one of those franchise ones though stuck in another store.

I used to put U.K. on the bottom of letters but I overheard the person dealing with my letters ask another, on several occasions, "Hey, how much is a stamp for Ukraine?".

Next I put on "Großbritannien " but got the response "Is this in Europe?"

There was a fair bit of eye-rolling from the rest of the queue for that one.

My wife suggested "England" but she said it would be better to ask what was the correct thing to write.....at the Post Office.

Re: Again... and again... and again...

Little island in the Greek Aegean back in the 1980s. Some tourism, but very few tourists spoke Greek (it was all Greek to them...), and most of the locals didn't speak a foreign language.

As one of the very few foreigners fluent in Greek, I always was at the center of attention. I lived with the locals, not in a tourist ghetto, taking part in everything that made up their day-to-day life.

Typical conversation:

"Where are you from?"
"From Switzerland."
"Ah. That's way north, isn't it?"
"Yeah, quite a bit."
"Colder than here?"
"Yes, on the average it's colder."
"Snow?"
"In winter, yes." On that island, they get a brief flurry every five years or so, and then the car body shops have their heyday because no car has winter tires.
"Yet another question: In Switzerland, does the sea freeze over in winter?"

Got asked that question many times.

Yup, frozen solid. You could drive a truck over it, all the way to Denmark.

Newly arrived in Bern, being questioned by natives: Which city do you come from? "Oh, I grew up in Herisau".
That is Germany, isn't it? Or Austria?

Newly arrived in Manhattan, being questioned by natives: Where do you come from? "Switzerland". Ah... Swaziland, how nice...but you are quite fair skinned!

Re: Again... and again... and again...

I once met a young man who spoke to me in perfect American English with a slight east-coast accent. I asked him where he was from.

"Uster".

"Nice, Worcester (pronounced: Woostah), I've got a brother who lives in Boston."

he looks at me funny and says, "Uster."

"yeah, yeah, Worcester, I've driven through there."

on the flip side, I have had several younger Swiss explain to me their great desire to visit America, without any clue whatsover that NYC to LA is not just a couple of hours by train or bus.

You all live in weird places.

"Hi, where are you from?"
"England"

"Ah, London?"
"Yes"

"Oh, I've been to the British Museum, did you live near there?"
"Yes"

I know, but she doesn't.

But then, what can you expect from a woman who cannot even pronounce "Chnoblauchpuureschüblig"? She calls them "Snowball Shnookleberries". I kid you not.
