I have a world wide unique name, family name combination. No need for a middle name for me.
So do I -- absolutely unique combination (unique surname, actually) -- and yet, my parents saw the need to burden each of their three sons with TWO middle names!

Most Europeans that I know DO have a middle name, sometimes several.

Tom
Quite. I'm surprised that some people think it's more a US thing.

And as for HR-assigned email addresses, I've worked at probably 25 different companies since email addresses became the norm, mostly as a contractor but also mostly assigned an email address. Not once has my middle name, even my middle initial, been incorporated into the email address.

Re: Again... and again... and again...

Mestre railway station, Venice, Italy (130 km from the Slovenian border) on 25th December 2004:

Me: Scusa signore, parla inglese? (Sorry sir, do you speak English?)
Officer A: Si, Si! Un po! (Yes, yes! A bit!)
Officer B: Di dove è? (Where are you from? (The conversation continues in Italian.))
Me: From Slovenia.
Officer B: Huh?
Me: Slovenia... ex-Yugoslavia?
Officer B: EX-Yugoslavia?
Me: Yes. Slovenia is an independent country since 1991.
Officer B (to Officer A): Did Yugoslavia fall apart?
Officer A: What?! When?

True story.

Re: Again... and again... and again...

When i told my Swiss sister in law we were going to Scotland for a holiday, she got all excited saying that she had always wanted to go to London.

Then asked me if, when we have an afternoon visit to London, could i send her a postcard.

Not realising that a "day out in London" was not a 30 minute drive. I actually had to show her, a grown woman, in the atlas where we were going.

Her mother, my MIL, when we were eating filet mignon one day asked if we ate that "where you come from?". My husband then informed her that "they even have electricity there". I loved them dearly, but they just could not get their heads out of their perfect little 10 kilometre radius of where they lived.

They'd never been on airplanes and the furthest "foreign" was the boat from Nyon to Evian.

Bless them.

PS I'm called by my middle name. Northern Irish Prod.

1. Conversation with fellow American in line to board a flight from JFK to Zurich.

So, going on vacation?
No, heading home to Switzerland
Wow, your English is really good.
Thanks! So is yours.

2. Conversation with co-worker 7 years ago after announcing that I was moving to Switzerland.

Wow, Switzerland. Do they have seasons there?
Actually, no. It's the one place on earth that doesn't have the 23 degree axial tilt. It's why the watches are so precise.
Wow, never knew that!

Re: Again... and again... and again...

I travel a lot and most people have absolutely no idea where Switzerland is. They always pretend to know - "aaah Switzerland, very nice" - when they clearly have no clue. I sometimes say I'm from Appenzell (I'm not), the reaction is exactly the same - "aaah Appenzell". Most don't even know that Switzerland is a country in Europe. Granted that happens mostly in less developed countries, so fair enough.

The Sweden-thing happens a lot to.

I also often get asked whether we had X and Y in Switzerland, usually very mundane, modern things. Ehm dude, this is a first-world country and the richest in the world, what do you think? The stupidest questions are being asked by Americans and Australians - sorry, no offence (I happen to like most Americans and Australians).

And of course the single-most question I get asked - provided the people actually know about this mysterious country called Switzerland - is: aah nice mountains and you must ski all the time? No, first off, we don't have snow 12 months a year and no, not every Swiss skies, just as not every Australian surfs, and no, not every Swiss lives on a mountain!

My wife still refers to Slovenia, etc. as Yugoslavia, even though we've been there a bunch of times (usually to fill up the car, Slovene prices are about the same as here, and much cheaper than in Italy).

Of course, most times that she has been there, it still WAS Yugoslavia!

Though, in her great-grandmother's time, it was still Austria, and in her grand-mother's time, Italy!
