Again... and again... and again...

"Where are you from?"

Re: Again... and again... and again...

A couple weeks ago, while in Trieste, I was asked if I was from Milan.

Anyway, around here Geneva is viewed as being in 'Svizzera Interna' (Innerschweiz).

"Oh your from Canada. I know somebody who lives in Canada. Do you know <insert name here>" /actually said to my wife from somebody in the US. And even more ridiculous part is we were discussing that she is from Vancouver (west coast) and this guy's friend was in Nova Scotia (east coast)

Re: Again... and again... and again...

Well similar as when you go to USA and tell someone you are from Belgium. They reply along the lines of like "ah Belgium, the capital of Brussels!"

Re: Again... and again... and again...

Slightly different but equally frustrating.

Friend or acquaintance, "Ah, you are going to Switzerland to live. Whereabouts?"
Me: "Basel"
Them "Where?"
Me: "Basel".
Them: "Never heard of it"
Me: "It's a city with a lot of chemical industries, just over the border from France and Germany"
Them: "Ah, you mean Bâle"
Me: "But that's the form used by the French speaking people of the region"
Them: "Of course, That's what it's always called"
Me: "Well the inhabitants, including of course the future Mr Longbyt, are mostly German speaking and they call it Basel".
They: "Alright then. I hope you have a good time in Bâle"

Repeat ad lib.

Re: Again... and again... and again...

During my stay in the U.S:

'I'm from Spain'

'are you like mexican or something?'

And the eternal fight to define ethnicity for spanish nationals. White-Hispanic or Caucasian?

Aah... Basel vs. Bâle - one of my favourite place names is Porrentruy - or in Swiss German: Pruntrut!
