3) Our hamster died; a traumatic experience for our 9-year-old. So my wife went with her to Qualipet in Steinhausen. They got there at 5:30 pm; the store closes at 6:00 pm. The store clerks refused to sell them a hamster, reasoning that they had paperwork to fill out and there was a chance they won't complete that by 6:00 pm! Obviously the 9-year-old was heartbroken and my wife was less than thrilled.
Do you really need a new hamster on the same day?

I could take your example of engineers and sales people and go the same way (never been an engineer) saying that the sales people are the ones out there representing the company and dealing with the people/making money while the engineer putses around with his buddies ..... it goes both ways. ( I know that is not what they do but that is simply used for this example. )
I have however been a Valet, cook, server, busboy, manager, and owner in the hospitality industry....
Haha. If waiters were sales and the cooks engineers, you would get such orders in the kitchen:

Pasta: tender and soft, but no salt in water, max 2 minutes, al dente, please not bland.
Filet migninon: medium rare, chicken, grass fed, min temperature 65°C, vegan if possible.
Salat: No egg products, italian dressing, with bread and egg crumbs, please no vinegar or oil.
Btw: The party of ten on table 5 will get the whole deal for just $250.

Yes, our kids love playing with the hamster. And both my wife and I work, so we don't have the time to trudge to Steinhausen several times in the odd chance we might be serviced.

If the unfortunate happens, and his wife dies, his kids can expect a new mummy by the end of the day.

Re: Miss the level of service in the USA

Odile,

"Well yes- but that's the way it is- very much so in my part of Romandie too in 95% of the mountains cafés/restaurants. You get caught once, as we did- and live and learn." - Yes, indeed, live and learn, carrying cash is unavoidable, so lesson learned.

"But thanks for the advert about the Museum- it looks very interesting so will check re-opening dates. Here in Neuchâtel we have another Museum about the lake dwelling Celts- called Le Lateinium- it's great- so would be interesting to check that one out." - We love history and try to get to various sites and museums at least once a month. We will definitely go back when it re-opens. We have already visited the Latenium, but appreciate the recommendation! We can also recommend the museum at Yverdon.

"Most Museums are run by a Foundation of volunteers- directing the renovations and fundraising takes a huge amount of time and energy. The Museum I am involved with at the moment (the second since we moved here) should have re-opened this autumn, but it will take at least 10 more months to put all the museography in place- exciting." - Understand your point - we are also involved with a non-profit (not a museum, but a language school) and there is never enough hands to do all tasks. It is still unfortunate to not communicate any delays of when the museum will be open. A lot of people from all over Germany (and a few Swiss cars) came in to see it and were disappointed.

Frankly this was disrespectful. We love our pets, give them attention and do not mistreat them. And the first part of the comment was pure rubbish.

PS: Pets are not toys.
I had a conversation with a primary school teacher some years ago about this: Mourning a pet is a way of learning resilience skills at early age and this should not be disregarded in her opinion. The short life span of some animals means that their death is a normal process and there is nothing wrong taking some time to a kind of grief before getting a new pet and enjoying a new pet's life again. She insisted that it is not that easy for young minds to realize that a new pet is not the continuity of the deceased one's life. Closure and positive processes facing death the way the family culturally want their children to deal with death is more important than immediate short lived frustration avoidance. Her words, not mine, but let's say I was intrigued by and interested in her point.

That doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

The Qualipet here operates the same policy although they do have several notices up in the store explaining the reasons for it. It says that they won't sell pets less than 30 minutes before closing time because they want to explain how to look after the animals correctly and complete all the paperwork without having to rush things. They also have to make sure the animals are properly catered for whilst they are closed at night.

A lot of talk in the UK about tips recently- as it seems many restaurants keep the tips, or share the tips among all staff (back kitchen too).

We usually pay by card, but always make sure we have cash to tip the waiter directy- amount depending on service. They really do appreciate the cash tips.

What's wrong with sharing the tip with the guy who actually cooked your food?
Back in Blighty, I used to give out many tips - and insisted that they found there way to backroom staff too.

The problem was that not everyone enjoyed backing the geegees or going into a bookies. My success rate was also questionable.

The intent, at a macro level, is understandable. But they had the full 30 minutes, so maybe they could have considered us, particularly since we already had a pet hamster for 2 years and that hamster was purchased from their very store! Even more bizarre, when we bought the original hamster from them the whole process took less than 5 minutes ...

I was going to defend the OP. He was venting and this is, after all, the complaints corner.
Until the hamster story. This attitude of I want it NOW so I have to have it NOW rubs me the wrong way.
Sometimes things happen a certain way for a reason. Belgianmum explained why they won't sell a pet 30 mins before closing time, and it makes sense. I wonder if some of the things he complains about are caused by his attitude.

Re: Miss the level of service in the USA

Great to read they are taking the welfare of pets much more seriously now- hurrah. But as FAltrad says, it is best for a child to go through the grieving and missing process first- and have a period of time without a pet. Buying one straightaway gives the message that pets can be replaced like things and toys in minutes. We lost one of our cats on Christmas Eve one year when our girls were little. It of course totally ruined Christmas- but it was a healthy process for them to go through. We adopted 2 cats from a rescue centre 2 weeks later.

BTW have you considered contacting a refuge to get a new pet - all refuges are full to the prim with unwanted pets that people buy in a hurry and then dump. That would be fab.

J. Maple, as I explained to Belgianmum, we had already purchased a hamster at that particular store two years ago. And it wasn't just the hamster that we purchased there, but also the aquarium, toys for the hamster, a hamster house and supplies. As I also explained, they seemed delighted with our first purchased and the whole transaction occurred very quickly - within 5 minutes. They had the record of our purchase.

I am not sure why the 2nd time was different? The only difference was that we were spending significantly less than the first time. We were not there to exhibit an attitude - we were there to purchase a pet.
