Builders parking in our driveway

Hi-we have a shared driveway, we are at the end of it, and there is one house halfway down-this is our only access. This house has a large parking area, and in the past we have not had problems. This is in french speaking Switzerland. Now the owner of the house has moved into an old peoples' home, and her sons are having the house completely gutted and renovated. This has been going on for a couple of months. The builders are coming every day, and sometimes 6-10 cars/vans at a time (no exaggeration). So now almost every day they block our driveway, sometimes a few minutes, sometimes for long periods. We don't need access all day, but now it is the principle of it. Yesterday I called a taxi, and when it arrived the drive was blocked. I banged on the door, no answer, I had to go into the house and call out, then they were very annoyed they had to move 3 cars. Today I came home on foot and found a van blocking the drive, I saw someone in the window, so gestured for them to move it, then the men came out and argued with me! I said i didn't believe that it had been there "2 minutes" and when he got angry with me, I said I'm the one who gets to be angry! A swiss friend has told me to go to the police station and ask for advice, rather than trying to contact the owner by letter, as we don't have their address. That seems drastic to me. Any advice, anyone had a similar experience? It is very upsetting to have an argument every day!

Block the top of the drive with your car.

Re: Builders parking in our driveway

Write to the office of the building firm and complain that they are parking in your private space and that when you ask them to move their staff are abusive. Tell them clearly that if their staff park there again or are abusive you will contact the police.

Send it by registered letter for the full Swiss experience.

Note the police won't come for a dispute between neighbours.

Re: Builders parking in our driveway

Well we've been through this very discussion recently with one of our daughters in the UK - their next door neighbours have had their house bulldozed and re-built about twice the size on the same plot. It's been a total pain, cars, vans, lorries, etc, etc, parking everywhere- debris, noise and more- for over 1 year. They put up with it best they could- had to shout at workers at times and get them to move the van so they could get out, etc- and now it'a ll finished...

so they are going to do the same- their turn, and the neighbours will have to put up and shut up. So if you envisage ever having work done on your house, and as you are at the end of the road- you will need the cooperation of your neighbours. Personally, I'd try and accommodate the work, within limits, to pave the ground in case I need for their cooperation at some point.

Re: Builders parking in our driveway

Is it a private driveway? If so I'm not sure the police can do much about it.

Talking to the people present won't be much use as they probably change often, perhaps daily. Some won't even understand you.

To find out the owners address you might try asking the Gemeinde. The owner had to get a building permit so they should have his or his contract partner's address. This is probably your best route, especially if he's your future neighbor as he'll probably want to avoid such a bad start.

Otherwise I'd take pictures and do as grumpygrapefruit suggests. If the situation doesn't improve markedly within a couple days I'd report them (if public road) or (if private road) contact the police even if it's a private road and see what they say.

Re: Builders parking in our driveway

There has to be a general contractor in charge of all the work. All others are sub-contractors.

All you need to do is get in touch with that general contractor and ask for some cooperation.
