Stories ... and musings

This isn't exactly a compliant ... just musings over a couple of glasses of wine.

I work in Corporate Finance and Accounting. Thought I had a cool profession, in terms of stories, that is. Stories about fraud and human 'invention' in cheating. Sadly, my wife, a dentist, is starting to beat me on the 'fun' factor of stories. She recently told me one that stuck with me. Humans are amazing species.

So, here is the story. A Swiss patient (patients are always nameless), Hungarian-born but has lived here over 30 years, came in for an exam. Had two large, old-fashioned gold crowns, which were quite visible when he smiled. He wanted them changed, asked for top quality, so she gave him a quote that included lab work from a Swiss lab (they are indeed very good). The quote was just over CHF 2000.

The patient, still having some roots in Hungary, decided to do the work there. The 2 crowns came up to EUR 800; hotel and food for a week, and airline tickets came up to another CHF 1200. So his total cost was about CHF 2400. So far so good ... except the crowns, supposedly from full ceramic, started falling apart after 5 weeks!

Four months later the patient calls for an appointment. At the appointment he tells the Hungarian story (paragraph above), how it turns out there was no guarantee for the dental work done, and how he has completely lost faith in ... ceramic crowns! He asked for a solution that does NOT include ceramic crowns. And, yes, there is a solution - adhesive composite reconstruction - which is a manual creation of each individual tooth. Lots of work for the dentist. Total quote - over CHF 5000. The patient says it's a go ... and because he sees the skepticism in my wife's eyes he pre-pays the entire therapy.

... when I heard the story I was speechless. Come on, REALLY, blame ALL ceramic crowns because some Hungarian sod screwed you on some low quality shit from China?!? By the same logic, I should hate the Chinese because I have eaten so much bad Chinese food in the US!!! Does it make sense to you???

I don't know why people expect the same quality at low prices only because it is somewhere in the East. The truth is that even there, if you want quality you have to pay more or less about the same price as everywhere. OK, salaries are lower but they still have to import all those medical materials.

blah blah advert for dental practice blah blah

Try to be more subtle next time, or at least make the story interesting.

I'm bracing myself for the next instalment. I'll just have to have a coffee to fill the time and bridge the gap.
