Re: Swiss bar staff awareness when serving drinks...

Totally agree that a good bartender/waitress should be aware of who's next. People are thankful for not being forgotten. Experience 1. People pushing in (Swiss style) and not getting served before others, (great fun watching them getting uppity), make the worst sort of customers. Experience 2. People taken care of, in turn, leave better tips. Experience 3. 'Regulars' seeing that the bar is busy the calling out "Three large ones, four stangers, eight whiskies... and a Partridge in a Cherry Tree" (it is Switzerland after all) get their order in good time. It works.

Cheers y'all. GREG

I don't get the problem. Make an impression with the bartender the first time you go up there and you're first served every time! Let the peons wait.

Walk up to the bar, find a spot as soon as it frees up, and make eye contact with the bartender. You will get served, if not immediately, a few minutes later. That has been my experience in general, including in Zurich. A couple of times the place was so crowded I did not mind waiting (cut some slack to the staff), a couple of times I was in a hurry and brought my business elsewhere. No big deal.

I do remember that in Zurich, more so than in other places, they regularly got my drinks wrong. "I'll have a coke" somehow became "A Jack and coke" more than once. When pointed out the mistake, they were apologetic and only charged me for the coke (except one time, a-hole bartender). Oh well, what can I say, I'll sacrifice and drink the alcohol if I must
"Wrong drink"? Sometimes I`ve been waiting so long that I`ve forgotten what I ordered. But always grateful and leave a substantial tip.

Re: Swiss bar staff awareness when serving drinks...

Tonight, I'm sitting in a restaurant/pub in the UK. I ordered dinner and the bar is 10 feet away. I am the only one here. My beer is empty. Do you think the goddamn bar man would offer to bring me another beer?

HELL NO! He just stands there like a Buckingham guard.

I apparently have to go to the bar to get another one. I mean bloody hell! Does anyone have the URL for EF United Kingdom?

Re: Swiss bar staff awareness when serving drinks...

On the bartender side I think it's lack of training, to me it seems no one really teaches them how to do it they just do it and get faster at doing it, but at least they're local people which is something good at least here in Ticino. Some serve the people they like most first or the alpha animal as someone said, but more often they try to serve a different position each time so it's kind of stochastic. Lately in a bar that i go to there's a bartender who is Australian or something and you really see the difference, the guy knows who's next, makes eye contact with the next customer while serving and already asks, and ends up being super fast while still being nice (not a robot), gets tips too.

The biggest problem is the customers imho, especially those that think being slightly drunk justifies pushing into people, the formula that works is 1. get a spot 2. use elbows and occupy as much space as possible 3. keep eye contact. I don't think this is a Swiss problem btw, it's the same in any joint with too much people inside.

Here I've seen some people leave a couple of coins at best.

Isn't that what a tip is?
Indeed that's the normal tip here, rounding up, saying keep the change, coins. In a restaurant maybe you round up a bit more to the next round number. Tips are not given very often but are not that rare either. Most people doesn't even know there are percentage tips in the US and it's really weird at first, I mean why don't they include it in the price if it's customary to give 25% right? It's just an alien concept. Then if you go to italy the restaurant may ask you to round the price DOWN maybe you get a 1-2 euro tip they get a lot more

We may be neutral in wars, but we're anything but neutral when it comes to standing in line. Politeness is for wussies. It's a dog eat dog world and the faster you understand it, the quicker you'll be at the front of the line. It's about body language, random comments and bruised elbows. It also helps when you know the staff through friends, family or work. Anyone else is known as an inferior being and will be treated as such.
