If you're in need of a loo in the station, just find a train that's not due to leave for a while, hop on (or just board normally; it's up to you) and use one of the toilets.

Free wee!
And then it all drips down onto the tracks where the people are waiting. yay

Re: Not enough female public toilets in ZH

On the trains where the doors aren't automatically locked, when stopped in a station, an alarm sounds and lights flash, when a toilet on a stationary train is flushed.

You'll still find the traditional "Plumpsklo" in use on Swiss trains. The Thun - Solothurn line for instance.

With all due respect, the people working there 4 years ago were complaining about it:

At the construction site, under the Zurich main station is to not work on Friday. After protests and strikes by construction workers, SBB want to implement improvements to ensure that no faecal matter and liquids more drops to the construction site.

If you're in need of a loo in the station, just find a modern train that's not due to leave for a while, hop on (or just board normally; it's up to you) and use one of the toilets.

Doesn't matter as long as people don't smoke on the platform.

I think Zurich is the worst place I've been for public toilets, and why on earth do they have pissior or whatever they are called ( those places where it's just a wall for males to pee up ) the other day I was going to my hairdresser on the langstrasse and really needed to pee, absolutely relieved to see a WC only to find it was a pissior ( yet again ) do they think it's just men that pee around here what on earth is it
Hi Hayleyjay, have to admit that I'm a woman who has practised the art of holding it in until I'm home in all visited countries / offices. See you are from Zurich too. As you're a fellow EFer, if you like I can let you have a list of my own small selection of frequentable loos when in dour need - but you better promise to use them as you would wish to find them beforehand . Just let me know.

She's going shopping in Zurich, not embarking in a Soyuz rocket to the International Space Station.
Well, to be honest most astronauts recommend a couple of enemas in addition before that one, as the stop-over facilities sound even worse than the usual public loos.

If you have trouble dealing with 1,5L of water per day, I suggest you get this.

I think Zurich is the worst place I've been for public toilets
OP:

PS. Just now reading through all the other comments and your replies - would like to let you know that I absolutely meant the previous offer of my (free) list of clean WCs in Zurich seriously. Feel with you completely.

Goodness, does no-one realise how horrible it is for a woman when faced with little choice but to succumb to most public WCs generally.

Let alone the forests of loo-paper the environment has to provide and absorb which need to be run around the rim first (preferably with a disinfectant spray on-hand) - before finding a dry spot to perch your feet between before hovering over the intended target, while keeping your Victoria S's dry.

(Apologies, but I am speaking out of my PTSD from previous countries mostly - got it nailed down before coming to CH).

I remember especially in the U.K. that amazing aroma of the disintegration of fag ends (don't know what it's called anymore - sorry if I offend) was an added pleasure to all such experiences).

And then in the horrific realisation that might've left a mess yourself out of complete nerves / panic attack - to just have to leave the cubicle hoping that it won't be blamed completely on you? Despite all best efforts, hope, cleaning up with your spray, and sense of decency.

I can't possibly, in a million years, agree with you that Zurich is the worst place, but know how you feel about using public loos. So, although I generally drink 3L water a day, avoid them whenever I can.

But again, am happy to PM you with a short list of really well kept free ones in ZH. As previous EFer/ins have mentioned - usually within tolerant restaurants / bars.

Re: Not enough female public toilets in ZH

You need a child .. I have two young girls and they always need need the toilet at the worst time. In three years here I've never been refused once to use the toilet, bars, shops, restaurants, supermarkets, estate agents offices .. You name it, I've asked to use their toilet for the kids and they've always said yes, with a smile. And yes, a few times I have a pee myself while we're in there..

Some have no public toilet but they let me through to the staff area, no problems .. So either borrow a child or just ask anyways.
