today I approached 5 random persons on the street. Two of them just strangely looked at me and moved few steps away, one escaped on the other corner of the bus station, one escaped after 60 seconds of answering my questions in one-liner style, while the last "made a call to his friend".

Will repeat the experiment tomorrow and report back with results.
Fascinating. You really must look quite frightening since everyone is running away from you screaming.

Maybe you want to start looking into a flight out of this hellhole you poor soul? --> www.kayak.com

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

No Swiss are not racist. It is just coultural thing that whenever someone gets passed on the course of psychology, he/she finds the most urgent need to figure out someone elses problems and locker that person to some "psychopath"-locker, with the knowledge of 12 weeks online course.

Don't be surprised, it is just a hobby here. Everyone is a shrink

Now that's amusing.

Bicycle, you remind me of Lostinbroad a few years ago...oh, the criticism. Pretty funny actually...so it might be your avatar only, as Lib was transporting bananas with his bicycle, whereas you seem to harass strangers in bus stations...btw, did you propose them a ride? Here's a solution for you: stay around, become an EF mod and you'll start loving Switzerland.

Interesting experiment but I'm not sure I get the point. What kind of questions were you asking? In my experience, most people are wary of complete strangers walking up to them and attempting to start a conversation. Asking for directions or similar is fine, but anyone who walks up to me at random and wants to be my new best friend is viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism.

No, more like Kentucky type of guy...
So you see, apparently the Swiss have the same effect on various types of newbies. You have to give that to them...but I'm sure you'll start liking them pretty soon though.
And please, for your own good, don't act too friendly in bus stations. Check out the meet up groups instead.

.... and why were you conducting the experiment?
Were you trying to get to know people?
Trying to practice your German?
Trying to somehow prove your original thesis that people are racists?
To learn more about social interaction in Switzerland or in General?
Trying to find a new tack to post in this thread?

For me, in immigrating, I turned a corner - after which everything else got much better - when I'd internalised the fact that my previous social skills simply might not be completely appropriate here. Of course, a greeting, and the ready use of please, thank you and sorry are seldom out of place, wherever one goes. Yet I got along better in Switzerland once I'd made some modifications to my own behaviour, to align it more with the culture here.

We're running in circles. If you're out only to confirm this theory to yourself I bet you'll find locals who correspond to this profile. Relax and meet people you like to hang out with (so what if they're foreigners like you?), trying too hard it only makes things worse. Small steps, that's all...

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

Not sure if this applies here, but generally speaking it might make sense to ask the speaker of whatever language in his or her own language if it's fine to speak in whatever other language. A situation par excellence where one might want to think about that is perhaps when planning to speak in normal German to a Swiss German (normal German = schriftdütsch) :-)

Hey, I'm a foreigner like you and I don't speak German as well, but most of the time when I ask for directions in Zuerich I get a total different reaction than what you get. However, I always approach people with a "gruezi, sprechen sie englisch?" in a funny accent and a smile.

I have heard several times people complaining how rude the Parisians are but when I approached them with a "Excusez-moi parlez-vous anglais?" I never had a bad experience.
