I'm not sure - but I do get the impression sometimes that there is a greater % of expats racist to the natives than natives racist to expats.

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

Before anything I want to state that I agree with the several posts in this thread about how racism is function of a person and not a country or religion.

I noticed a big difference between how people are on the internet vs how they are in reality. (I guess this again applies to most countries)

I think this forum has an overall high maturity level but most other places on the web I've tried to seek information or ask questions before I moved here - I've had people say "don't come", "remember that rape is not allowed here" and several other hurtful things purely based on my nationality.

In real life though, it was quite the opposite. It has been two months since I've come here and people are so incredibly polite. They don't socialize or welcome my advances to befriend them but I suppose is cultural and requires more of an effort on my part. Otherwise, I don't feel like 'racism' is a thing at all.

i found the Swiss locals here in GLarus are wierd and rude too, some of them, not all! for instance, i believe some of them have never been out of their country but staying in the valley most of their lives..they saw me as a chinese face ,felt so strange , even i do normally say Gruessi! as the locals did, some even not responded me and looking at me with an irrogant face!

@Jane Li
Please remember that what seems rude (and polite) to you may not be rude (and polite) here. It is always both a personal and a cultural mix.

This helped me when I arrived: after I found that people were acting "strangely" (that's what I thought) towards me, I asked a totally Swiss person to come out for a walk with me. Part of the way, we split up, and walked about 400m apart. Then, she watched me as I walked towards her, and she saw how I moved and looked at people and how I greeted them.
I was amazed to learn that - for this culture - it was me who was behaving strangely.
That kind Swiss woman helped me a lot!

And a more detailed answer....

Firstly, in all the time I'm in this Switzerland, or better to say Shitzerland, I have made 0 local friends. Zero. None.
And have you put in effort to make local friends?
Also, (i) 3 months is a short time; the Swiss do tend to take a while to become close friends (ii) If you think this place is "S***zerland", I wouldn't be surprised if you fail at making local friends.

Quote:
> nobody ever takes a seat next to me on public transport
Strange. Somehow, I can be the only person in a bus/train and (local) people tend to make a beeline to sit next to me. I am sure I have complained about this here!

If you feel all of this staring and women feeling threatened by your presence, perhaps you should find out the impression you give.

You're a woman, more likely a non-ugly woman and that's enough to integrate.

I tried, but can't even finish a sentence and they're running away.

No woman on earth will bang an unattractive guy in casual way. Alcohol is just an excuse for promiscuous act.
do you behave like this in real too?
if so, what do you expect from other people?

You got paid back in the same currency you prefer to use. If you treat all Swiss as racist they just call you... guess what?

"few months in Switzerland" crew checking in
...
Firstly, in all the time I'm in this Switzerland, or better to say Shitzerland, I have made 0 local friends. Zero. None. All my friends are non-swiss. Truly unbelievable, it is something that I have never achieved in anywhere else. The whole experience can be summed up with:
...
...
Don't know, but I got feeling that swiss people are EXTREMELY SUPERFICIAL and CLOSED MINDED.
...
Did anyone of you experienced something similar?

Hmn. It is a while back now, but I don't remember it being as you describe.

This may be due to the fact that during the first 6 months I was here I spent the overwhelming portion of my energy trying to learn German.

It may also be related to the fact that, at least initially, I was at best a gibberish spouting enigma - the Swiss do love a riddle.

It may be partly related to the fact that before I even arrived here I made a conscious decision to drop the phrase "That is wrong." with one of: "That is different, I wonder why?", "This is odd, I wonder if it is universally so".

I also avoided (for the first half decade) Expat and English only circles like the plague. I found that there was a tendency for the English to spout English gibberish (an experience not unknown to Colonials), and a general tendency to decry the place due to the unavailability of a good Curry/Cheesies/Hamburgers/Brown Sugar/Non Himalayan Salt, or the fact that dealing with the local bureaucracy wasn't exclusively in English.

As to the entire nation being "EXTREMELY SUPERFICIAL and CLOSED MINDED", you are correct: You don't know. Perhaps if you spent less time in meat markets and more at the butchers your experience would be different.

But for an "EXTREMELY SUPERFICIAL and CLOSED MINDED" evaluation based on a couple of months, your analysis is representative. You need to change this.

No they would call you a foreign racist with bad English and obviously no knowledge of any local language. Look at how local women react: “women feel threatened, disgusted, get nervous but in majority are very snobby when I approach them”. It’s your own description and it’s about how any such guy gets kicked away. Try not to behave like a caveman in mating mood next time around.

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

I have lived in many countries. Switzerland is by far the most different with regard to meeting locals. They have a very unique style (for the most part), more so than other cultures i have spent time with. But then you have other things that make up for some of those differences and hence we are still here after 9 years. A few semi close Swiss people we call friends. but then i dont have much time for non swiss let alone swiss friends with work and life and kids so its not really a big deal at this juncture. But as a whole, and keeping to topic of thread, it is a very xenophobic place.

Re: Are some of the Swiss - Racists, or it is just me?

JimBeam, you seem to be determined to view the Swiss as being racists and, thus, you view them with such tinted glasses to the extent that you are not evaluating whether there is something in your behaviour that is chasing people away. I am indeed a female and I do run away from certain kinds of men- not based on looks, but based of their level of sleaziness. Furthermore, as JagWaugh mentions, it does seem as if your efforts at integration is restricted to nightclubs/bars.

But, admittedly, the people here do tend to stare (and it has, I believe, nothing to do with racism; they stare at everyone) and they take a while to make friends (I reckon that 50% of my closest friends are Swiss). probably even 90%, but 40% are naturalised Swiss!

And how exactly do you know that all these people staring at you, running away, etc, are Swiss? Are they all wearing labels saying "I'm Swiss"?

You have another 3 months of your internship to go. Unless you plan on trying to stay in Switzerland after that (which doesn't sound likely) then just get on with things and enjoy your remaining time here.

A perfectly valid question which also occurred to me while I was testing prototype foil hats. To solve the issue I have implemented a sensor which can detect if the people staring at me are Swiss or not.
