Re: The terrorists ruined my Easter...

I know some people say that it is safe(r) to go immediately after a terror attack. Personally, a holiday means freedom to go where I want, to eat what I want, to do what I please. The idea of being over-cautious, or looking behind my back all the time would be a deal breaker for me.

Shame about those terror attacks in Turkey; OH and I have never been, and we're hoping to visit this year! As things are, we may have to wait for a few years before we could add Turkey to our list of places to go to!

Until you realise it's your own reflection in a shop window.

The UK FCO currently does not advise against tourist travel to most of Turkey except the provinces to the South-East.

Re: The terrorists ruined my Easter...

We had planned a trip to Istanbul in October which was a big deal for me as I was stressed about the earthquake risk.
I probably will not visit at present due to the terrorists. So sad that so many places for trips are making tourists think twice and the locals are the ones who suffer.

Go. The risks are small.
Maybe Tunisia is an alternative, plus you get to support the closest thing the Arab world has to democracy.

I'd go too.

As Pashosh says, the risks really are, in the grand scheme of things, minimal.

The UK foreign office isn't advising people not to go.

Their advice is usually sound and often errs on the side of caution.

But I guess we're all different and see risk in different ways.

Another thought, Istanbul will probably be full of military presence and people being vigilant, like in Paris at the moment. Therefore, safer than ever before. I would go.

Well, this is what they are saying... it's pretty hard to avoid the area of Istiklal Street if you plan to stay and shop in central Istanbul...

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey

Quote:
There has been an explosion on the morning of 19 March on Istiklal Street in central Istanbul resulting in a number of deaths and injuries. You should avoid the area and follow instructions given by Turkish security forces.

Terrorism

Although the Turkish authorities have successfully disrupted attack planning in the recent past, the threat from terrorism remains high. Terrorist groups, including Kurdish groups, Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL) and far left organisations, continue to plan and carry out attacks. Further attacks are likely.
There were large bomb attacks in Ankara on 17 February 2016 and 13 March 2016, in which more than 50 people were killed, and a suicide bombing attack against tourists in Istanbul on 12 January 2016, in which 10 tourists died.

I have a friend who is Turkish who lives on the Asian side, and works on the euro side. He say's it's horrible there, media clamp downs so no internet meaning he can't work from home as he would like so has to commute, empty streets as everyone is scared, and he told me the police found 14 stolen cars prepped for suicide attacks... how small are the risk?

Turkey has around 3 million Syrian "refugees" thanks to open borders' policy up until recently. Thanks to the same policy, there are quite a few ISIS fanatics operating in the country too -or at least trespassing it.

If you are not there to visit your relatives, friends, or business relations, why would you take the risk! If lunatics are ready to blow themselves up, how can you protect yourself or those dear to you?

I believe tourism will suffer dearly -maybe it should, Turks have been opting for the much cheaper Greek islands following ridiculous price hikes at home

Try Marrakesch instead as a good alternative to Istanbul.
Second this. Been there & around during new year, too touristy for me, but as somebody wanting to go to Istanbul you can say it's quite rural

You can go to nice safari in the desert, check atlantic coast, visit other cities like Tangier etc. very nice experience, no real danger so far, nice people (outside Marrakech, in it everybody tries to get a bit of cash from you) it's not democracy but neither is Turkey. Just stay out of Western Sahara part, probably still safer than Istanbul now but they had some demonstrations and unrests.

Looking back, the countries actually feel pretty similar too (arabic, westernized though, dry climate and so on).

Perhaps it's for the best you have cancelled. Since Turkey downed that Russian plane last year there's virtually no Russians travelling to Turkey. These terrorist attacks will deter many others from travelling too. With tourism being such a big part of Turkey's economy, crippling it could hopefully lead to Erdogan's demise.

All the sights etc are in Istanbul itself rather than in modern Beyoğlu.

Last time I went, there was enough to do in and around Istanbul itself for a few days.

But you've cancelled your tickets anyway. I was just answering your question about whether we would still go.

This time it seems it was ISIS.

Normally perhaps, Turkey seems to be an exception at the moment though, this is about the 5th attack in the last year. Shame, Istanbul is a fantastic city.
This time was Isis targeting tourists. PKK like to target police and military.

Better now before it turns into a civil war which is what many analysts are scared for.

Where did he hear about the 14 cars thing? I'm asking because it is difficult now to know the truth from Tayyip's propaganda.

Re: The terrorists ruined my Easter...

I'll give you my two cents and you decide what to make of it. My advice is: listen to the locals, not the media.

I used to travel very regularly to Israel -sadly not so often now (not by choice)- and, despite all the BS that you see in the media, I always went and had a great time. There is always the risk of something happening somewhere, I risk my life everyday just crossing the street, what if there is a drunk driver passing by at that exact time??? However, I listened to the locals and did 100% what they told me to do/not to do: don't go some place, don't do some things, stay away from such and such activities/people, etc.

Personally, that's my decision criteria to decide what to do: what would the locals do?

Re: The terrorists ruined my Easter...

That's certainly good advice.
You can die almost anywhere, anytime.
Case in point: the recent bus-accident in Spain.
Or even the bus-accident with all the Belgian kids in VS.

Though, I have to say my GF would probably be too scared to go now.
