Trolls.

Yet again I come on here and see why a previous poster said newbies are given a short shift and mostly don't come back.

If you don't have something nice to say, something positive to contribute, why can't you control the urge to decimate people?

Is it a mental health issue? Are you bored? Is your life not fulfilling? Is it a cultural thing? A superiority complex? I notice there's a lot if that here with ad replying people for defending others?

No wonder this world is falling apart. Trolls, I blame you. For Donald trump, for Brexit, for the refugee crisis and their treatment when they get to countries that are safe to be met with sometimes worse treatment than what they left minus a war.

If you would not say it to a person in a crowded room for everyone to hear, maybe you shouldn't type it either.

Please explain why you feel this psychotic need to cut people down when they are expressing their concerns, asking questions, putting themselves out there?

What? Since you joined on the 8th of August this year?

Quite.

Strange. All of us were newbies once and managed to survive. What we have here is the typical "*sob* *sob* *sob* why can't this forum be like I'd like it to be *sob* *sob* *sob*"

In the meantime:

Re: Trolls.

Been a member for less than a month and insulting members on here after obvious helpful advice from their side given to another poster - then coming back to insult yet again in a new thread, complaining about being neg repped (probably not having duly noted that the rep system on EF is a way to show approval and disapproval, and that positive/useful input in the forum normally yields green rep):

Pot, meet kettle.

Have you met EF members in the real world?
There is a huge number who would not only call you out but insult you far harder than they would on here - after all we have to play nice for the mods.

If you aren't enjoying EF you are more than welcome to log out and never log back in again.

Oh good, someone who knows better. Just what we've all been waiting for. Please, create a poll and let us vote if we would like to see you become a mod and finally make EF correct.

Perhaps we live in different worlds. Mine is neither exclusively positive, nor universally nice, I abhor the real decimation that actually happens in it.

If we were to take only English, and discard everything that wasn't positive and nice, the libraries of the entire culture would fit in a large shed. It would make degrees in history, literature, political science, psychology and psychiatry brief enough that the complete knowledge would fit on an ipod and we would still have space for "It's a small world after all" for the bus rides.

Name one single author who has contributed to the culture of the world which only wrote positive and nice things. Just one. Greeting cards don't count.

I am in person about the same as here online, perhaps a bit faster, as I don't need to concentrate on spelling when I speak.

You blame the ills of the world on trolls? Really? With all due respect, these problems are more the result of people who are so convinced of their moral rectitude that they do not feel the need to think critically, or evaluate if their version of the "right" thing to do is in fact likely to result in the outcome that they expect.

Perhaps you should look up the term "psychotic", it has a very specific meaning, and it is neither positive nor nice.

I am not a big fan of slandering or verbally abusing people trying to deal with a difficulty. Amongst others that would include people with mental health issues, the bored, unfulfilled, those from a different culture, and those with a superiority complex, but this is only a small part of a very long list.

It isn't that I have anything in particular against "nice" and "positive", far from it. Censorship does not improve the world by silencing the nasty, nor does it eliminate them. If anything it deprives the world of any opinion other than that of the censor.

Groan me if you wish, then create your poll. The groan won't make the slightest difference to my vote, presuming that I am worthy of one.

Re: Trolls.

Just for fun, however, I'm going to give you a serious answer (mods, this is a separate reply so it can be groaned/thanked separately, please don't merge).

In short, we have an online presence here. We've built up a community of sorts. If someone comes along and reads the English forum, they're going to associate the posted opinions with us.

Then people like you and Haley (to whom I assume you are referring) come along. You spout nonsense, sometimes wrong, sometimes idiotic, sometimes mind boggling. Frankly, we don't want to be associated with it, so we rebut it, some of us more gracefully than others.

Let me be clear: per the above, ignoring your nonsense has an impact on us, perceived or otherwise. Therefore, we have an urge to respond. You believe that ignoring you has zero impact and are therefore proceeding from a false assumption, and frankly, even if that impact is marginal, it still means more to us (speaking generically here, not collectively) than the opinion of a faceless stranger who has presented opinions that cause us (again, generic) to instantly disrespect him or her.

So: you're the new kid. Make a good impression, don't pee on the grass. Guess what? We'll all get along. If not... Then not. That's life. But you're off to a bad start, starting a Friday thread on a Saturday - now we have to keep it alive all week!

It happens to 'oldies' too.
Although my own post count isn't as high as some members, I've been around a hell of a lot longer than most of them.
I don't usually post unless I have something sensible to contribute, and when occasionally someone insists on mis-understanding what I'm saying or deliberately (it seems) takes an opposite stance for the sheer hell of it I withdraw from the conversation and go off into the real world for a few days.... I might even kick something.
It's referred to as being 'bigger than them' I think.

Admittedly there are a few members that seem to snipe for the sake of it; whether it's out of boredom or nastiness I'm not always sure, but on the whole I suspect it starts as gentle teasing, the OP gets a bit uppity and at that point the midden hits the windmill.
Then again there are members who'll go out well of their way to help, both here and in real life. Guess which of those two groups is in the majority?

Just occasionally you'll get new(ish) members who honestly seem to be begging for it.... I'm not going to mention specifics but there have been a few recent threads that have been absurd in the extreme, and I've had to ask myself it the OPs are serious or attention seeking.

Re: Trolls.

There are opinions and then there is bigotry, xenophobia and plain nastiness... Yes I do blame modern day ills on trolls and ignorami (plural), the Internet age has endorsed above bigotry, xenophobia and nastiness as opinion because it's so easy to troll all over the Internet with NO thought for morals, or just no thought, so has intruded into everyday life as normality. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, and fortunate to be surrounded by good, morally sound people to still be outraged at someone being tormented because of being fearful of visiting a doctor?

Of course I have no problems with the helpful replies/posts, and yes the trolling is not the majority, but trolling should not be mistaken with the genuinely humorous posts that take a light dig, and of course written language is always misinterpreted, that's why we have issues with the bible, right? Thou shall not kill? Totally misinterpreted to mean thou shalt only kill refugees and when provoked. Love thy neighbour? But not with your pink bits....

Re: Trolls.

Hmmmm...I don't think there is any "we" in terms of individual behavior. Everyone is responsible for their own online conduct, how decent their acts are.

We do have however "our" community, people put their effort in, clock-in and out, if you wish. Our community is definitely in control of determining the atmosphere here, the level of cohesion.

It will be as good, quality, fun and quirky - as we all want. If noobs don't get a chance to figure out how helpful the community can be, because somebody promptly snipes at them...our loss. If they show up unprepared, unadjusted to the risk of online comm, people are smart here, they know how to help them.

Pleeze SHOW us where we are tormenting the poster in the other thread about going to a doctor, and especially how supposedly high the ratio of fun-poking posts there is compared to the incredibly helpful ones???

The way that thread is running - now as well as it did yesterday - people were and still are very very helpful and offering the OP their advice and time to assist her getting help, not bitching at her and tormenting her.
