I wonder how many people just started craving nice fresh crisp peppers and how many craving a Marlboro.
I tried red peppers but I couldn't get them to light.

You obviously aren't dedicated enough to be a real smoker.

I didn't begin smoking until my 20's, but remember the guys at college smoking string (hemp) and dried banana skins.

How many peppers do you think you'd need to eat to be on par with smoking one cigarette?

Come on, please tell us.
"Cauliflower
The 1993 study found 3.8 ng/g of nicotine in a cauliflower, which means that a person would have to eat 263.4 grams of it to equal the effects of being in a room with a smoker for three hours."

"Pureed Tomatoes
Pureed tomatoes were much higher. A previous study found 52 ng/gram of nicotine. Eating 19.2 grams equals the effects of passive smoking."

The study actually stated: in a room with a minimal amount of tobacco smoke for three hours so I guess it depends on whether we're talking about JagWaugh at one end of the scale or Pastycat at the other.

But of course the nictotine isn't the harmful or carceogenic substance causing harm to others with passive smoking.

Did you pay the TGV clean up squad?

You, guys, are cracking me up.

Blueangel, I love fresh crisp veggies! And peppers are one of the things I worship. Beets are yum, too.

I suggest some protective measures (for the chick, of course).

I think debates like these can have an impact and I am glad when those with different opinions are not being trolled, shushed, shamed or mocked.
It could have been worse - having DB all over this thread....and telling you to take an aspirin and go to bed.

Frankly I don't understand why a different opinion than the one of Tom is regarded as trolling or whatever. I got it - it's a sensitive subject for him (and for others it seems) and I give him (them) the credit for that, but it doesn't mean we all have to agree on this one.

Btw, I'm around kids a lot because I happen to volunteer for a sport club. I've never encountered anyone (parents or other staff) smoking next to them or blowing smoke into their face. How is that different in the way that it's endemic in schools is beyond me, honestly.

I do not get it either, as I wrote, GM. I don't know why is he called zealous, his posting style gets ridiculed, his experience gets shrugged to briefly singular, just because his opinion is different? We have posted, a bunch of us, actually, that that trait is a pattern and it is not only annoyingly selfish, but also unhealthy. Is this exaggerated reaction to what he (and us) disagrees with any way related to somebody daring to criticise this place, perhaps? He is not critical to this place in general, nor all smokers. What he said is - the exposure of nonsmokers to smokers' impolite habits here in public is disagreeable and actually not legal elsewhere.

The fact you haven't experienced it does not mean others have to be content with their experiences. Putting them down as them having difficulties with adjustment to reality (who's...his or yours?) is not conducive to a debate.

It is not a big deal, and he is a big boy, just like all of us. But to be deliberately misinterpreted and accused of something that the accuser in fact does, is absurd.

We can disagree in a way that may be less humorous, might attract fewer audience but might get us to a smart thread.

Btw - I am glad you have a good group of sport people! Good for you.

To be fair it's because Tom1234 doesn't just 'post his opinion', he bludgeons people around the head with it with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer until the horse has died and decomposed. Tireless, unrelenting, the very epitome of zealous.

You're a lovely person MusicChick, but you're consistently and utterly awful at reading people and context, to the point where you may as well be on a different planet.

I would frown if I did not know that you are the youths and if you did not compliment me 1st... So clever hahahahah.

Seriously, though, I get Tom being anti smoking. I am not so into being anti smoking, as being anti thoughtful. That behavior that a few of us mentioned here that we dislike, is so anti-thoughtful. Ripping on Tom for having a critical view of some local ways (hold on - these particular jackass smokers are not the only thing, gasp) is anti-thoughtful. I disagree with a bunch of things with a bunch of people, and consider polite disagreements to be constructive. I happen to actually agree on disliking this particular anti-thoughtful pattern of carelessness of lot of smokers in public areas, train stations, bus stops, parks.. (GM - again, great for you that that particular sport group happens to be considerate, does not surprise me, we have those here too).

I think I deliberately read specific people and specific contexts differently than you. I think it would be weird if I did the opposite. Unless I wanted to be really liked.

As I've written before, we have at least one ashtray at home. Visitors to our place can, and do, smoke on our terrace.

That doesn't make me so anti-smoking, does it?

However, I believe it's an anti-social habit and smokers seem seem pretty discourteous here compared with other places I've been - but as JagWaugh has also stated - that's cultural*.

*And UrsMax if you take offence at that - please name one other western country that allows young children to smoke at special festivals?
Doesn't make Switzerland pretty unique in it's stance on smoking?

The only bit I grasped is that MC doesn't want to be really liked. The rest of it did weird stuff to my spell Czecher.
