As far as I'm aware, it still lives, somewhere that I'm not allowed to reveal, along with several other "sensitive" threads.

I've heard that the Mod Zone is a veritable treasure trove of EF history.
The Free Beer thread can still be read? I'd love to read it again, great memories.
And cheers from DaveA

I read it when I was a mod for a few weeks.

I guess you had to be there (i.e. I didn't understand the fuss).

Re: 9 months in Switzerland - a honest report.

back on track, since it is a Sunday and most people are going to end up here anyways...

OP, give Geneva another shot...the women are very friendly (in cafes and public places) and talk to you, no mater what you look like...unlike in Zurich where you are considered to be mentally diseased if you start a conversation with a stranger.

the money, yeah i agree with you there, its a sacrifice however, there is no reason why you shouldn't spend at least 2 weekends a month outside this dreary place (i know i do).
i tried making friends, but in the end the effort required here is not worth it, when you can trip, fall and loose yourself in a pretty french or Italian girl in the towns across the border.
wish you best of luck, and if you are smart, in 5 years time you will be able to amass enough wealth to leave this place and set up a really good life anywhere else in the world (again, speaking from personal experience here).

Well, back when you wrote:

As far as I, (with my limited grasp of the English language) can tell, you were accusing me of approving stereotyping of some group or other based on whether I agree with said stereotypes.

You then grouped me in with some group of bullies, and implied either that I am delusional, or unintelligent, (or possibly both).

I called you on those claims. Whatever it is that you have done in response to that, it doesn't (to my mind) constitute an answer.

Good for you that you are well read and that your spelling is better. This apparently means that when you make some claim or allegation, you've no reason to actually back it up with anything of substance. This is remarkeably similar to the behaviour of a bully.

As to the intellectual laziness, I think I am clear on what I mean by it, you may have reached a higher level of rational discourse than I and subsequently have no need of critical thought. For my part, I'll just keep struggling on.
I think you are unnecessarily offended by what I wrote. I really do not have the time and inclination to go into long discussions with you.

I see, since I left the forum last night to watch back to back episodes of Come Dine With Me, this thread has gone the way of many other EF threads: completely derailed by the banter between the usual suspects.

For me, the problem is not the difficulty of making friends with Swiss people. But just going about your business as a certain type of foreigner can be a challenge. You will be constantly lectured by old ladies, told off by Migros cashiers and stared at by everyone else. It can really get to you at times. Yes, you can leave if you are not happy but if you have to stay for one reason or another, it is not a lot to expect some decency from other people. Having said that, I, personally lost hope. I am following the strategy of avoid or counterattack now: I snap back at the lecturing type, avoid Migros and stare back at the starers. You should see the expression on their faces when an "Ausländer" does that. It is hilarious.

If the women are friendly to you, it doesn't mean they should be friendly to me. Probably you're attractive and also probably you've talked with auslander girls.

Went in France for two days, met bunch of people (they can barely speak english, but they put effort in it) and have met two nice student girls, who to my surprise invited me to their home. I couldn't comprehend how there can be so much difference for me just by heading 2 hours on north.

switzerland is a necessary evil to make investments. If it wasn't for that I'd be wasting my life here (which I'm still questioning) and it would be like going voluntary in prison. Most of expats who i do know, and who are in the same age range, don't have any intend to stay here. I recall my first week in CH, when I met a group of german guys, for who I though they were swiss (in that time i wasn't able to differentiate between swiss and german). We got into a talk and somehow I ended with saying:"Maybe it's good to retire here in CH". They all started laughing, and then one of them said:"Dude, one simply doesn't stay in switzerland. At this point you may not know what we're talking about, but you'll see it in a few months why."

Switzerland is a great place, lots of great women, wine, and food, as well as motorcycling roads.

It's you that's the problem.

Perhaps you confuse "taking offense" with "making an objection", these are two different things, similar to the way in which "being argumentative" and "making an argument" are.

Thank you for taking the time to not respond meaningfully to my objection.

The usual suspects being the ones who actually keep this forum going.
Everybody keeps the forum going.

Those who selflessly contribute and are decent, those who help out but can't resist feeling bigger or being snide at times..those who nag about how things aren't what they used to and point out at other heavenly pastures, or people who come with constructive suggestions or libertarian college kids looking for fake space (there aren't any, really).

Nobody has more rights to it than others. The claims because some happened to sign up earlier or spend more time at internet wars, are pretty ridiculous. There is no pecking order despite those who look for it. The brownie points, reps or other currency are only valid as much as people value 5' internet fame.

OP - sorry, you are really talking out of your arse.

Since I came here 20+ years ago from the U.K. and also lived under the false presumption of "Switzerland is a great place to be born in and a great place to die, but what the hell do you do in-between" for the first years, things have changed an awful lot.

As others have alluded to on your thread, life is what you make of it. And I can't see any better place to do it than here.

It's confirmed by several researches btw that People born in Switzerland will tend to be amongst the happiest in the World, and have the best quality of life judged in terms of wealth, health and trust in public institutions.

So, that's the foundation - the rest is up to you, and you alone.
