But I'm not sure if I choose the right part. Double check.

Re: Car repaire grumble

Interesting thread .. because for me it's one more argument for bangernomics.

Get a german high mileage 'old' car with a recent mfk for 'peanuts' (3 or 4k). Drive it for as long as you can and as soon as any repair becomes absolutely required that cost more than.. say.. 500chfs... dump it and start again. With any luck your 'write off' costs per year will only be 1 or 2 k.

Not Tom's old POS is it???

The X3 was bought for (relative) peanuts with fresh MFK and service. That BMW service will last 20-24k KMs - at which point I'd be happy to trade it.

Re: Car repaire grumble

I still say late 80's early 90's was the best time for cars. They had electronic ignition, fuel injection etc, doing away with much mechanical stuff, but didn't get silly with things like electric steering, or electric gear levers.

BMW has an image of quality but there's actually rather a lot of stuff which goes wrong when it shouldn't.

Agree. If you look in that era you'll get FI, decent fuel economy, ABS, more than enough for a daily driver. Mine is a '98 Alfa 145, 160000km, in the last 3 years I've replaced the Clutch Cyl (50CHF) and put Freon into the A/C (50CHF - needs this about every 5 years or so). Doing your own maintenance helps keep costs down, as does not buying a car which is trashed in the first place.

Mine was originally my mechanic's wife's car. I paid 3K for it in 2010. Even a cellphone costs more than 43/month just to have the thing.

Before doing anything, and considering this time of year check the battery is still behaving as it should.

Random messages can be caused by bad batteries, today's cars loaded with electronics are very susceptible to low battery voltages on turning the key.

Tom owns a Ford Focus?

Somehow that doesn't at all match the mental picture I have of him.
