[Behavior on] Swiss Trains

Why don't SBB make a few rules about behaviour on trains? It seems people are allowed to do whatever they want. Eating smelly food like Macdonalds, Asia takeaway, and Bratwurst, in packed trains seems to be the norm. Playing music on mobile phones, without asking anyone else if they want to listen, is another thing.... Why can't they just use headphones?
Putting bags/luggage on seats in a busy train and not bothering to move it when it's obvious that someone needs that seat. If you ask them to move it (the luggae/bag) they often look at you like you've asked them to hack off a limb.
Anyway that's this rant out of the way. Thanks for your attention.

Just be glad you've not encountered the men who like to play with themselves as others on the forum have recently discussed....

Well at least they aren't "allowed" to smoke any more.

IMHO - I'd would rather they stand in line more politely

Re: [Behavior on] Swiss Trains

They have quiet carriages on trains so you can get away from the noise.

Bags are a problem, what can you do but ask them to move them. Sometimes though, the trains don't have large enough overhead panniers for them.

But as for food, I don't see why that would be banned, especially as some of us may be making a long journey, or have an early start and don't have time for breakfast.

You're right. One can never have enough rules. How about compulsory gagging for those that complain loudly to everyone but those responsible about every petty thing that goes on around them that doesn't meet with their approval ?

Ah, but they'll soon find a way round the new rules. I recall the Limerick:

There was a young man from Ealing
Who took a train to Darjeeling.
It said on the door
"Don't Spit on the Floor"
So he lay down and spat on the ceiling...

A very weird experience on the train
Standing first class [in the train]?

be careful, though, when complaining about something that is very useful, well-priced and efficient - you'll come across all Swiss.....

This does wind me up, specifically because those who play music out loud have the worst taste. I tire of hearing pop-rap, I even feel like saying "in a few years time you'll realise how crap this music is and live the rest of your life in shame"

These are usually the same ones that have ghetto hats with the peaks pointing sideways and trousers that do not fit correctly. Something should be done.

Re: [Behavior on] Swiss Trains

Hi,

I have to commute 2-3 hours each day between Basel and ZH.

As I am normally out of the door at 6am, I make toast and coffee at home and consume it on the train - this is cheaper and nicer than the muck you get at any of the station outlets. I could have breakfast at home, though I would rather spend the time playing with my little boy who wakes up around that time.

I once had a takeaway from the noodle bar near Altstetten station on the train home, however that was when things had been in meltdown at work, I hadn't been able to have lunch and I was leaving the office at 8pm meaning I wouldn't be home until 9:30pm - so I felt justified in this case. I got funny looks from other passengers - so what.

I take on board the playing of music aloud which some people do - they are called "personal" stereos for a reason. I generally carry an MP3 player but consciously lower the volume when in the train carriage.

I don't see anything wrong with having a beer on the train - particularly if you have been working hard during the week and need to unwind. My Thursday evening routine is generally a can of Heineken and Slade's Greatest Hits on the MP3.

Cheers,
Nick

What p<moderated> me off is you get on the train wanting something to read and there isn't so much as an evening Blick to be found!

Re: [Behavior on] Swiss Trains

Ear sensivity to the sound might greatly vary from one individual to another, but I cannot comprehend why some people pump so many dB to their eardrums that would drive a normal person bananas... Sometimes I see on the trains teenagers plugging they MP3 and boosting their voulme so you can clearly listen to it meters away from the source!

Doesn't the first post in the Thread strike anyone else as peculiar but me?
A Newbie, who has never posted before, writes a post at one in the morning on a subject which, in various forms, has already been well and truly done to death on this Forum. (See Lob's Links) Do you think he is counting the replies to see if 'he' can catch up with the Geneva car saga?

Why don't Moderators make a few rules about behaviour on this Forum? It seems people are allowed to do whatever they want. Fancy allowing people to barge in with their 'rant' without introducing themselves.

In a lighter vein, as you get older you tend to lose some of your sense of smell, hearing and sight... which just for once, can be an advantage.

Re: [Behavior on] Swiss Trains

Thanks for all the responses to my rant. I realise that it's important to keep an eye on the bigger picture. Swiss trains are cheap and efficent, which is more than can be said for trains in England. I don't actually think they should ban food, maybe just a polite notice to remind passengers that some foods are more acceptable than others. Music should be personal as far as I'm concerned.
I can understand bags on seats when there's not enough space on the racks, but if it's just some attempt to protect personal space (common amongst Swiss people) then I don't have much patience.
