Kids Medication

What is up with the suppositories here. I ran out of Childrens Tylenol from the states. I stock up everytime a friend goes to the states and im all out. The last thing anyone wants is somthing shoved up their rear when they are sick. Its sadistic.

When your kid is puking everything up you have no other choice

You can buy Tylenol drops at the pharmacy.

I must be a masochist then...tampons anybody.

I think they often prefer suppositories for young children to avoid the medication upsetting the infant/child's tummy.

Re: Kids Medication

We have bought it both from our family doctor and the pharmacy here in Switzerland. It is called Kinder Tylenol. If they don't have Tylenol, just ask for paracetamol.

We do stock up on Tylenol tablets for adults though in the States as it is nice to have a few bottles of a few hundred pills rather than the annoying 10 or 20 packs that we find here.

Re: Kids Medication

Keep the suppository in your hands for about a minute so that it will slightly melt outside. Like this it will hurt your kid less. Or try Ben-u-ron syrup which also contains paracetamol. My kids like it and they're usually very picky

Suppositories are disgusting, but have a point.

Re: Kids Medication

Thankfully, they make Dafalgen Kindersirup, which is paracetamol suspension and is only Fr 6 a bottle. With two teething kids that are wriggly as hell anyway, I'm so glad I don't have to use the somewhat Victorian-style suppositories.
Not only that, we'll not have to ever have our kids going home and explaining that when they're ill 'mummy and daddy put something up my bum to make me feel better'. As most of my relatives read The Sun and think a paediatrician is a pervert, I'd be lucky to escape without a life-threatening beating...

Re: Kids Medication

Use a touch of vaseline to slip them in..

My kids hate drinking any kind of medicine or taking tablets, so suppositories are a blessing. And you know the dosage you've given them, which is not as easy when 1/2 a teaspoon has been spit out again...

Re: Kids Medication

At a certain pre-school at which I worked (which shall remain nameless), I was invited, in the case of sudden fever in one of my charges, to insert aforementioned objects in the appropriate place, to ameliorate the condition.

Being an English man, trained in the English educational system, with English mores and attitudes (not inflexible, by any means, but there are limits to everything), I suggested that such medical intervention - indeed, medical intervention of such an intimate nature - was, perhaps, the prerogative of a qualified doctor, and not some random bloke who just happens to be a teacher.

I further suggested that, were my charges to return home to tell their English-speaking parents that this bloke, who just happens to be a teacher, had been performing medical interventions of such an intimate nature to them at school, not only was I likely to lose my hitherto excellent reputation, but I was also likely to get my head kicked in.

Reason, I am delighted to report, prevailed, and I was never expected to use suppositories with any of the children in my care.

But the fact that I had to argue my case continues to disturb me.

Isn't it blatantly obvious to any thinking person that teachers can't go around shoving things up other people's kids' bums?

Or is this considered normal in Switzerland?

I guess, integration or not, I'll always be English when it comes to some things...

Re: Kids Medication

When i had my first child and she was ill my doctor gave me these things to put up my childs bottom, and i was like NO WAY, but now i think they are the best Medication for any child because first they get the full dosage, and second it is the fastest treatment for them to get better, i have even used them on myself(adult version) so i know they work fast

Re: Kids Medication

It is perfectly normal to give children supps in preschool here in CH. Most of your kids have probably already gotten it and you don't even realize it. And how do think they check your little ones for a fever btw?

Ps. Haven't we already had this discussion here on the forum once?

I suspect you may possibly have missed the gist of my post, which is that I'd rather not be applying suppositories to other people's children who happen to be in my care, given that I am:
  • not the child's parents;
  • not a qualified doctor; and
  • a man
Perhaps that is a uniquely English position, but it is not one upon which I am likely to ever compromise.

I doubt any of my children would have had suppositories in school, since I don't have any!

As for checking for a fever, mercifully the preschool at which I was employed used thermometers which were inserted in the ear.

My argument presented above would have been aired again, had I been expected to test for a fever in any other way!

Is it normal for pre-school teachers to medicate children without notifying the parents in advance? Scary thought. I think I'll have a talk with them tomorrow to ask them to please not insert any foreign object into my kid's ass. Ever.

My ancestors were German and Norwegian. I prefer to keep that region of my body a one-way street, so to speak.
