Sunrise shoots self in foot

I can't believe it. Millions of Francs pumped into marketing and Sunrise Internet does an "auto goal".

I have my own email address that is hosted on a server that a friend has. I am using Outlook Express on my machine (which downloads all of the emails and stores them on my machine). I have had a problem with sending emails for two days now. Receiving is ok.

Looking at the error messages it says that the outgoing emails are being blocked by Sunrise's server. I figured that they were having technical problems and it would clear up. This morning I finally called their help-line.

The tech person announces that as of two days ago Sunrise has blocked access to the Internet by all email addresses that were not Sunrise. And of course they did not advise anyone so this poor ******* is fielding calls left and right. His helpful suggestion was to look at my emails on the web (using webmail). What a piece of crap.

So if anyone else is in the same situation, save the phone call (which is a pay one of course) and just change providers to someone else.

You say it is being blocked by the sunrise server if this is the mail server I would say this is normal and a good way of reducing spam mail sent via the sunrise server.

Is your outgoing mail server something like mail.sunrise.ch or mail.friendsmachine.ch?

If the outgoing mail server is your friends machine, then this is a block on the sunrise firewalls and not normal.

(I have just checked with my sunrise internet wireless dongle and I can still send mails via my own mail server without problem...)

Hi Pat,

Here is what I am getting in terms of error message (personal details masked).

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxx@yyyyyy.com'. Subject 'Re: Thursday', Account: 'mail.myfriend.com', Server: 'smtp.sunrise.ch', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 <xxxxx@yyyyyy.com>... Relaying denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

So as the Sunrise guy mentioned, I am no longer able to use the Sunrise server to send email. Something I have been doing for four years. My server is based in Toronto so I have a few more hours before I can talk to my friend to see if there is a work around.

If you have any suggestions where I do not have to use webmail, they would be most appreciated.

Re: Sunrise shoots self in foot

The problem is that you are trying to relay your mails through their SMTP server, mails that come from and to domains others than sunrise.ch

This is a rather normal practice, even if optional so many don't enforce it.

Just configure your mail client ( Outlook or other ) to relay through the right SMTP server for the email address you are using.

Problem solved.

Re: Sunrise shoots self in foot

As Salsa_Lover says you need to change the outgoing smtp server is you mail program (I would post a screen shot, but do not own a copy of Outlook Express ) .

Also, Sunrise have a page about this "change"/information on their website DE / FR and the need to authenticate to use their smtp servers or get the server information from your mail provider (if not sunrise).

Hope your mail is now working.

Pat, thanks for that link. It is different from what the Sunrise tech guy said this morning. He said ONLY Sunrise can use their server from now on.

As I read the Sunrise page, I need to make an adjustment (add a password) and I can still use their SMTP server. I will pass on the link/discuss it with the guy who hosts my email.

I will report back on the solution (hopefully).

Just successfully sent and received mail on my Balcab account via my Sunrise internet dongle.

Cheers,

Re: Sunrise shoots self in foot

OK, here is where I am. After talking with the guy who manages my server, I followed the instructions from the attached link to do what Sunrise is asking.

http://dnet.net/techSupport/smtpAuthOE.asp

In this example they have entered the same server for both incoming and outgoing (not my case).

In the section 5, I put my Sunrise info. since in section 4 I am using the Sunrise SMTP server. Still no luck on it working. Sunrise is still blocking the outgoing email.

I have read the web link to the Sunrise page (above) which seems to suggest that it is still possible to use the Sunrise server to send emails.

Would someone be able to look what they have entered in their computer? I am looking for someone who is using their own server for incoming email (like me) and using Sunrise for the outgoing email. What do you have in the entered in section 5?

Many thanks.

Re: Sunrise shoots self in foot

The thing is.

if you are using an email account that belongs to domains other that sunrise.ch then you can't relay your messages through their SMTP server.

What you have to do is to setup your mail client so it is uses the SMTP server of your hosting domain.

so if for example your email is someone@somedomain.com

The somedomain.com should have a SMTP server like for example smtp.somedomain.com

This is the address you should put on your mail client settings.

Re: Sunrise shoots self in foot

Hi Salsa,

Many thanks for your help. I had been using smtp.sunrise.ch for the out mail. Which as we know they have now blocked.

We had tried all kinds of combinations including authorization or not, ssl, different ports etc. but we had used mail.myfriend.com for both in and out rather than the correct version which is mail.myfriend.com for incoming mail and smtp.myfriend.com for the outgoing mail.

Just made the change and back in business.

Thank you again.
