Dorschfilet: Price in the Coop (31.12.09) was Chf 32.50 per kg so for Chf 15.-- you got 460 grams, if this is not generous for 1 person, then you must have a big appetite !
You were in luck. I just bought some Dorschfilet at the Coop - CHF 48.00 per kg, which I assume is the price I also paid before Xmas.

Yes indeed - nothing is more exciting in the moving-to-twilight-years
than the prospect of increasing amounts of nasal and ear hair. Loved

Here's the sort of thing that sets the pulse a-racing...

Also talking of racing pulses (and back on thread), we were passing
Kaufmann Metzgerei at the top of Bahnhofstrasse, and saw the
Scottish Bacon in the window. Rushed in, inspected closer, saw
the very small print "Schweiz" on the label, stumbled out, heartbroken...

My most recent experience with absurd prices was shortly before Christmas. I hadn't really been tracking the price of meat but, as I couldn't find any lamb chops in the chiller cabinet at Coop Sihl City, I went to the meat counter to ask for 8 of them.

The butcher plopped the package down in front of me and as I picked it up I caught sight of the label. "CHF 39.57" I dropped it back on the counter and said "I only asked for 8 chops." to which he replied, "Yes, there are 8 in there."

I gave him the package back and said thanks, but that's more than I am willing to pay. He called after me in a rather p*ssed off way, saying "This is Swiss quality!"

That worked out at CHF 5 per chop! Quality is one thing but that was a veritable rip-off. Plus if it was Swiss meat, there are bugger-all transport costs involved so how do they justify that level of pricing.
last time i was at the migros fundgrube i got some frozen nz lamb chops for chf 17 a kilo and a frozen leg of lamb for chf 12 per kilo. they tasted great too.

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

lasagne bought yesterday, eaten today - 3.80 chf for 960gr (in Migros)

iphone 16GB 3GS - i compared it to similar offers in U.K. and Poland, and Orange in Switzerland offer was ~20-30% cheaper than any other.

got it for 310 chf with 1 year contract, 1 gb data, free calls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to Swiss fixed line, 29chf/month. Would be much cheaper in 2 years contract. or with different monthly subscription plan.

Hi juice99,

Surprisingly, your post coincides with a question from a Dutch friend. Are these iPhones 3 GS with or without SIM lock?

Thx,
Marcel.

Which is not cheaper than the UK if you make any calls to mobiles to outside of the 7am to 7pm.

We did the same and the iPhone in Switzerland is double, sometimes triple the cost of the UK iPhone.

On the talk plan you are on, if you make 400 minutes of calls to mobiles, it will cost you 140 CHF extra per month. That is madness!

Plus, you only get 1GB of data.

When it comes to iPhones, Switzerland is NOT cheaper than the UK.

Continuing with the iPhone discussions,

Orange in CH ran an offer in Dec selling 16GB ones for 179 CHF deposit and 29 CHF/month for a contract period of 24 months (can vary depending on the scheme you take)

I compared a similar scheme from SFR , when I was in Paris recently and it was much more. They charged a one-time of 175 € and a monthly 35€ for a period of 24 months.

So, it is actually better sometimes in CH (though the instance might be once in a million times)
But the SFR deal comes with unlimited texts and an hour of talk time per month. Across the 24 months, depending on the calls and texts you make, the SFR deal would probably be cheaper.

Maybe he was then referring to the Swiss quality and Swiss qualified way he had hacked each one off the rack for me then.

Whatever it was, for CHF40 I'd want them to have a platinum core running through them.

He was proper miffed that he had to unpack them and put them back in his counter.
The quality in CH is good but not great, all the same I like to buy meat (Lamb, poultry, veal) at the Turkish butchers, fresh meat and a great quality, I got one Kg chops for 14 Chuffs, methinks the Shops get subsidized from the Turkish government

Not by the Turkish government but by the French Republic Most Halal / Kosher lamb and beef is imported from a state-owned slaughterhouse in Besançon, and the lamb is mostly of NZ origin. The whole establishment is controlled by the "Haut-Rabbinat de Paris" under joint Jewish-Muslim agreements.

Did not know that, it explains why, much to my surprise, I see on or two Jewish shoppers in the shop.

i took the one without any free minutes (other than the ones between 7 a.m.-7 p.m.) because i didn't need any. ( i have company phone for that )

my mission was to get iphone with data subscription plan, for as cheap as possible. U.K. and Polish offers were all 20-30% more expensive.

Orange in U.K. gives only 750 MB data, and there is no subscription plan for 12 months ! shortest is 18 months and it costs 50 chf per month (x18) + 310 chf for iphone. compared to 30 (x12) + 310 in CH, with 1GB data.

You are a very unique user; most people tend to make calls with a phone!

The orange tariff you mention does come with 250 texts and 150 minutes per month (not that I would get a UK iPhone on Orange).

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

I have to admit that I have found the Migros to be a lot more economic than Coop (probably obvious for those who have been here a long time). When you go at the time they are about to close also on saturday (like I always do) you find lots of stuff for half the price and the quality is good. I still though get meat in Germany.

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

I was in Bern and spotted a valve-based ipod docking station in an independent hi-fi shop window. My missus went in (she speaks v good german) and asked the price. The guy said it was 990 CHF (c £600) but we could have it for 900CHF. My missus was all for buying it as an xmas present 'cos I'd been harping on about one for a while. I said no because we didn't have that kind of money at the time.
I called a mate in UK immediately on leaving the shop and asked him to google-it. Best price he saw on the web was under £350 I bought an un-used one off ebay for £160
Shop around !

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

A few lifetimes ago I was a mechanic so am very wary of garage service costs here (even with the Swiss intergral thing) . So my Mercedes ML needed a service I asked for an offer, CHF650 +/- quoted, bill arrives CHF1442, hmmm. I got my wife to ring to get all the b*llsh*t first and then rang myself. I very politly explained that this was completly unacceptable and we would have taken it elsewhere if we were quoted this price. As it turns out a mistake was made (a major service not a minor one) their end, no problems we will only charge for a minor one, new bill Chf1040, not great but a slight win.
See thread on car servicing for more info.

Which Orange plan is this? The least expensive I can see is X-treme Surf at CHR35 a month and for this the 16gb 3GS costs CHF 379.

I don't get this

If for you price is so important why buy an ipod (or anything Apple) in the first place?

Don't you think that buying one of the most expensive fashion accessories on the market and then bitching about price is a bit absurd?

I get it. In a country where VAT is 7.6% one begrudges paying 600 for something that can be aquired in a country where VAT is 17.5% for 350. I find a 71.4% surcharge inexcusable even given increased rents/salaries other excuses. Such premiums will be reduced over coming years as Swiss consumers have more options open to them and products become increasingly global rather than market specific.

Its almost like selling to Russian oligarchs "is only 350, is not enough I want to buy one for 1000"
