Are you joking- most of EF might be, we are on UK £ pensions! (we came here when the £ was 2.52- so do the sums at about 1.40 now!).

Lib, beauty has its price- but the point is that said beauty would cost me nearly 30 Euros , about 40% more if I get delivered to me here, rather than to my friend just up the road.
The exchange rate wasn't 2.52 in 2010. About 1.66 middle market. It was 2.4 middle market is 2007 and iirc and according to your join date you came in 2010.

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

I used to buy clothes from Veillon through the catalogue long before online shopping existed. I usually sent half of the stuff back.

Nowadays, i go the old fashioned way and actually go into a shop and try on the clothes. And come out 100% satisfied.

Why buy clothes on line? Silly. They look lovely on the computer screen but in real life they are a failure.

Go down the shops!!! Wear loose fitting clothes, and shoes that can be easily removed. Don't go for trousers wearing boots with laces!!!

Oh dear, a stalker, you can't help it, can you?

Not that it is any of your business, quoting from you, but here goes

We moved to CH end of March 2009, but bought the house in Feb 2007. But you are right, my memory was not correct, it was 2.42 not 2.52. Thanks for kindly pointing that out.

So you didn't move here when it was 2.42 or 2.52?

No not a stalker. Just calling you out on your little fibs.

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

Indeed, me made the decision to move then, when the £ was at 2.42, buying the house and moving gradually, buying second hand furniture from friends, and moving bits and bobs as we spent more time here. I didn't realise I had to make all the detail clear in that previous post for you- but all is clear now, I hope basically the decision to move here was made on the basis of 2.42- the lowest it got was 1.18 in 2012 (I think, from the top of my head- just in case you feel like checking it out for me)!

When I first went to work in London, exactly 45 years ago- conversion of prices was easy (in old money though ) as it was a neat 10chf to teh 1£.

My father came in 1947 and continually moaned that back then the exchange rate was Chf 17.-- to the pound.....

Coffee at Chf 3.-- really pissed him off, so much so, it was just easier to pay rather than let him pay and bitch for the rest of the day/week !

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

Worked in Winterthur from 1963 onwards. At that time you could go to the railway station and change pounds for CHF! whereupon, you would receive 12 francs to the pound. Then Harold Wilson devalued [I think it was he] and we only had 10 to the pound - and we thought ourselves hard done by, but then this was only occasionally when my parents sent a birthday present.
Way back then, we earned a princely 600 per month and thought ourselves dead lucky! How times have changed.....

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

In London 1970, I earned £11.50 per week- as full time PA and assistant translator. My digs were 7.50 with breakfast- didn't leave much for entertainment I do wonder what the £/CHF was when my mum spent a year in London and Hastings in 1932? I have some fabulous photos of her time there - those knitted swimsuits actually looked good on her (she would be 100 next week).

We went out today with SFr10. We went to the pictures, few pints at the pub and still had change for chips on the way home! We have no problems at all living in Zurich off the proceeds of my paper round!

I even get a canny bag of Tudor crisps for delivering to the tower blocks!

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

We didn't read EF before coming to Switzerland. Mainly because it did not exist. We used really radical technology - books and writing to friends who had already lived here for a while.

Given the number of EF threads where people ask questions and others respond with <automoderated> remarks from the usual "Besserwisser" types, probably the amount of useful information we garnered in the process was about the same.

I only read this forum for the entertainment value.

Cheers,
Nick
