Over 9 Billion CHF in cross border shopping last year so somebody must be doing it?
Well, you know, once I discovered Marktkauf has regular sales of Movenpick ice-cream for 2.20€ a large tub, 9 billion just flew by.

That's impossible to know, and the assumptions behind such a guess will vary depending on the payers' interests.

Well, I have to say that I'm still shocked that a terrible lager on tap is usually 9 CHF when you get get a craft beer in the SF Bay Area for $5.
I paid CHF 4 the other day for a very nice lager.

CHF 9 is for a pint of Guiness.

All of you seem to be earning much higher wages in Switzerland
I earn about the same as I would in the US, but much more than I would in any of the neighboring countries.

Well, it works the other way around too.
Recently bought a Johny Loco bike. Price almost the same as in D, but with salary adjustment one gets it lot cheaper.

Sadly a Guiness is 11.- in Zürich, but that's exactly as one would expect in Zürich. It is also 8.- for a Grosses Bier here, so that's around 5.60 GBP at todays rate, in London its around 3.60 GBP a pint.
Because the wages for those working in hospitality are double that of the UK, I understand a higher cost to cover that also I assume renting a premises in Zürich is much higher then the national average, interesting that a new minimum wage increase was rejected over fears that prices would rise even further:

A pint in Zurich 10 years ago was 8-8.5chf at a time when the FX was 2.2 (when London was £3)

Now it is 8.5-9chf and the FX is 1.5 - and London is now £3.50-4.00

The only people who feel hard done by on that basis are those who live and earn here but mentally live in £ - and those who have recently arrived. Long term residents see no issue with the prices.

Well, those of us long termers who negotiated their salaries based on 2.2 (or 2.4 in my case), at least.

I must be going to the wrong pub! I am not complaining and I don't feel hard done by, also I don't drink like I did ten years ago, but I was living in Thailand then, so it cost around 70 thb (1.10) for a large Chang. It's all relative as they say...

A few years back I was in Slovakia enjoying <1eur a beer. I then did a check between average salary and beer price - and there was sod all in it between Zurich and Slovakia

At www.restaurant-vietnam.ch a Grosses, a Chübel, a Humpä is still just CHF 5.

I would like to learn more about the DK proxy beer price cost of living index (DKPBPCOLI). Must I sample all the beers to get a deeper understanding?

It works like this:
- Google for average salary in country in which you are drinking
- Drink beers in a number of bars and towns. Based on the beers you remember buying create an average beer price.
- Use the information for your home country following the same principles above.

Use the highly complex calculation:
DKPBPCOLI = (Wages (Home)/Wages (local)) / (Beer (Home)/Beer (Local))

Where DKPBPCOLI > 1 then "cheaper" at home
Where DKPBPCOLI < 1 then "more expensive" at home

Example:
Home country: wages of 120k, beer price 8
"local" country: wages of 12k, beer price 1

(120k/12k) / (8/1)
= 10/8
= 1.25

This is what happening when you type too fast and not releasing the shift key before pressing the < key. That's why programmers prefer the U.S. keyboard layout.

Re: Absurd Swiss prices

I find all of the Swiss prices crazy. Some favs:
  • Pack of V6 gum in the checkout line - 3.40chf - that's insane, but I like the Green Tea Jasmine so I take one for the team.

All the POS bike stores, selling used POS bikes for 2000 - 3000 CHF. WHAT?

Corn on the Cob - I usually pay 19 cents for one, tops. You can normally get 12 for a US dollar. Here? 2 CHF per ear!

A small flaw? No wonder I think Swedish 2.4% beer is a steal.

However, I get mine for free.
