semi complaint and semi question

i moved into my flat a few weeks ago and i love it.

sadly i am only allowed to do my laundry about once every three weeks. april gives me the 8th (where i thought i broke the washer...good times) and 26th but may and june i have one day in which to launder.

i find it okay being that i am in switzerland and heard about these wacky rules before moving here.

what gets me is the fact that the 'dryer' is a giant wall fan in a giant room, TWO giant rooms actually (one for each washer and really, two washers for a building with 40 flats....) which would easily fit a couple energy efficient washers and dryers.....

i am learning to be more energy efficient and i like this a great deal about switzerland....but i don't have a months worth of socks or under garments and washing in the tub has already lost its allure.

so if anyone in ye old basel knows of any coin op laundries oh please PM me or post it on up!

No solutions here...but I am impressed to find someone with a 'worse' washing cycle than ours ! - we get to wash for three days (unless one of those days is a a Sunday) with a 10 day break in between...

For a family with two adults and three children - the washroom is pretty much *full* of washing when we carry it all down after 10 days - plus linen, sheets and towels...

But ours has a drying room (not that we use it) and an industrial washing machine and dryer - on economy wash and maximum dry the loads take 45 minutes and both finish at the same time!

I think there is one on Dornacherstrasse,close to Media Markt

You could always look for an apartment with its' own washing machine - they do exist.

You could also look at installing a washing machine in your apartment yourself. In the long run (or this being Switzerland, perhaps the short run) it'll be cheaper than using the laundromat a few times.

When I first arrived here, my apartment had one in the bathroom. But I asked the caretaker about the washing rota, and she said that you can always talk the key holder. If they're doing their washing all morning, they may be happy for you to have it all afternoon, etc. The other residents loved me though, because having my own machine to use, I never used my rota.

well the key is given out at six PM the night before the day we are to have our laundry day. i get home around six from work so this wouldn't work out unless the person wanted to do their laundry the next day instead of that night...worth trying. good advice!

not allowed to have washers in the flats.

it took me so long to just find anyone willing to rent to me that the last thing on my list was making sure i had good laundry.

i just needed somewhere to live that was kind of neat, big enough so this was it. it's a great flat otherwise.....

i could also pay my bosses or beg them to let me do a load here and there although i have done a few 'secret' loads without telling them....which might come back to bite me in the booty!

Of course, once you've gained a few friends, you might find somone who's happy for you to use their washing machine, perhaps for a small fee to cover wear and tear and electricity.

I really don't know how families manage it though. We have a house, and so our own laundry room, but with three teenages we're often doing 2-3 loads a day...

I'm not sure if this will help but I was at the dry cleaners at the Banhof and picked up a flyer which seems to advertise (I don't read German properly but it's got pictures) that they do service washes. It's not cheap at 49francs per 35l bag and not quick on a four-day turnaround but perhaps it would be useful. No ironing so far as I could make out. I'll be more interested when they collect & deliver back.

I've attached a scan of the flyer (hope that's okay with the mods) - as you'll see there are 3 branches, Dornacherstrasse, Claraplatz and what I assume is the Banhof one. I can't vouch for how good they are since I just dropped off my dry cleaning and they may yet destroy my trousers!

Unfortunately, I scanned it sideways so you may have to contort a little to read it. (Should've read the instruction book for the scanner)

Hopefully you find something - in 2007 when I was looking around, I couldn't find anything, besides the type of laundry bags that Scoobysue posted or regular dry cleaning...
