weird noise in my neighborhood...siren..horn...

so last weekend, the weekend before and last night there has been this sounding horn noise.....i don't know how to explain it.

it goes off every ten minutes or so.

i live close to the german boarder near rhein center/kleinhüningen....and near chemical/pharm companies.

it seems like an air raid siren but off in the distance.....

not so much a complaint but it can get annoying with summer here and windows open for air....

anyone near the boarder in basel hear this noise?
do i go ask the local police about it?
will they look at me like i am insane?

i don't have many pals that way so just a bit curious.

It wouldn't have been a car by any chance?!! Some cars do that. Gosh, a total nuisance.

I'm living in Kleinbasel, and I heard this sound too - all night long... maybe the DB or the SBB are working on their railway tracks.... normally they use horns to warn their workers of bypassing trains...

it's very timed.....not a car alarm.

i asked my boss when she got home what she thought and since there seems to be shipping docks nearby then it could be this.

Re: weird noise in my neighborhood...siren..horn...

It could also be an alarm from one of the chemical plants, depending on how it sounds. They usually only test them during the day, so if you're hearing it at night, it could be something to pay attention to.

the first weekend it was going on all day and all night. then it stopped during the week and now it's only at night on the weekends.

my patio looks out on the parking lot/warehouse of a chemical plant (i love the smell of my flat when i get home!) and i have seen fire trucks out there more often in the past couple weeks.

maybe i should go visit them!

:-)

Odd, it probably isn't from them then. Not sure what it would be, but it would drive me nuts!

You get used to the smell after a while. I used to work at one of the chemical plants in Schweizerhalle, and it takes a bit to get adjusted to the smell, but eventually you do.

i am used to the smell. it's just weird to live in the flat and have my 'stuff' around and it still doesn't smell like my 'home' if that makes sense. like baking bread or pies.

the noise was back again last night.....starts usually a bit after dark around nine or so. it's very muted with the windows closed....curious indeed.

The question is if you really want to get used to it? I used to live in Muttenz. They have that glue-manufacturing plant there which emanates a faint but nasty (to me at least, my wife never smelled it) smell. That was enough for me to leave the area - cant' be healthy.

i do keep wondering how healthy it is ... for now it's going to have to do... i don't smell it when i am home and opening the windows helps. i keep one small window open while i am not at home but the smell is overpowering when i come in after a days work.

i even smoke in my kitchen with the windows open, cook with tons of garlic usually.....but still every afternoon/evening it has this one specific smell....

what i would like is to not hear this horn every night..... i figure that riding my bike and living in cities most of my life (and of course the disgusting smoke i inhale daily) ensures that my lungs are pretty much coated in lots of things by now....
