Do you use the "ignore" function?

Hi!

For the first time ever, I started using the "ignore" function today: From the discussions, I guess I am annoyed by the same developments Dougal's Breakfast has posted in two threads in this complaints section before, American politics and pedantry.

I have seen many EFers come and go and never was so annoyed that I really wanted to blind out ones contributions. However, in the last weeks only a small number of posters keep on annoying me by being completely off topic (not having anything to do with the purpose of the forum) or otherwise utterly useless for the supposed target audience.

As discussed many times, I surely agree that there should be more than enough space for jokes and other off topic discussions. And I am sure that others have contributed much more than me and do not in any way want to critizise the Mods, you are doing a great job. I am just wondering if I am the only one feeling this way and what is actually going wrong.

Do I get less tolerant because I have heard it all before here? Did I spend too much time in Switzerland? Or did the forum evolve in a way I personally simply like less? Has anything changed in the way it is managed or people treat each other over the last six months?

So tell me, do you guys use the ignore function as well and what do you think about the last months?

I've been known to ignore threads, yes, but not people. (Another option for the poll, maybe?)

Basically this is because I am a curious little monkey, and if everyone else is moaning I want to know who they're moaning about and what s/he has done this time.

And the last six months have been brilliant for me. Best of my life. I have discovered Stilton and my life will never be the same.

So yeah, I'm probably more chilled about the whole politics'n'pedantry thing than others might be.

I am too stupid to change the poll, otherwise I would immediately do this

Three choices seem better. Sada, top, middle or down?

(Seriously: Where is the "edit poll" button?)

Re: Do you use the "ignore" function?

This forum is far too tame to use an ignore button on. Go spend some time on the "Church, State, and Money" Section of www.advrider.com

Re: Do you use the "ingore" function?

I don't ignore a poster. I sometimes avoid threads that have gone off the rails or are limping round in circles like someone with one foot nailed to the floor.

I've adblocked a few avatars though.

Re: Do you use the "ignore" function?

I have once used the Ignore thread function in the past, and have been driven very close to using the Ignore Member function quite recently. But I think for the moment I will struggle through the inane drivel and treat it with the disdain it deserves.

I think that smiley adequately fills in for the lack of a snooty, stick my nose up at, smiley

What he just said. Without the adblocking, though, 'cos I wouldn't know how anyway.

And even though there is one poster I would love to see disappear, I have some masochistic streak that just won't let me miss a second of his self-indulgent off-topic ramblings. Dunno why.

Never used it, wouldn't even know how.
Too interested in reading what all the fuss is about.

I dunno, there's a certain schadenfreude in watching how some of the threads develop when in real life, you'd simply never speak to that person again. Every now and again I do enjoy joining battle against clinical numpties, like over the Israeli thread...

Re: Do you use the "ignore" function?

I never use the ignore button - it's a form of censorship, and I believe in freedom of speech for all posters, no matter how much I may disagree with them.

Also, using the ignore button shows you're just an intolerant git

Salsa Lover hasn't made mine yet... but it's been close. ;-) Actually, I tried to ignore a mod the other day too, as I got tired of incessant posts on the same topic, but I learned that doesn't work.

I believe censorship can only be done by a government, if you're true to the actual definition of the word, but I'm not 100% sure of it. In my case, it's more like intolerance.

Re: Do you use the "ingore" function?

It's an internet forum... I haven't worked up enough emotion about them, the people, or what is posted (beyond the odd bit of heated debate) in order to ever resort to ignoring someone for ever.

As long as you keep things in perspective and realise that the internet is a place where everyones behaviour changes (as per the greater internet ****wad theory), there should never been a need for ignoring anyone, as to do so would indicate taking things personally, and that's around the time you need to start stepping away from the interweb for a while.

Re: Do you use the "ignore" function?

I use the ignore function in all ways possible. There's too much content on this forum, a lot of which is not so useful, so I use the ignore function to help improve the signal to noise ratio by a small degree. I ignore people who make a lot of posts but never contribute anything intelligent or are always just complaining, I ignore threads that I am tired of seeing on the list of new posts which I never plan to read, and I ignore whole subsections of the forum that I'm not interested in - General Off-Topic, Inernational Politics, Jobs Wanted, and Pet Corner. I'm never going to be interested in those things, so it is better if a computer filters them out for me rather than me having to read all of the thread titles in the list of "New Posts."

Finding the controls to ignore specific users and threads is easy, but if you want to ignore a forum subsection then you must go to My Settings, Edit Options, Miscellaneous Options, and select them from the list. Strangely, the list of subforums is out of date and doesn't entirely match the current structure of the forum. However, it does appear to work for the subforums that do still exist (I pointed this out a couple of months ago, but nothing appears to have been done about it yet).
