I have an offer of 'x' much, will I become a homeless bum on this wage?

How many posts starting with:

'I have been given an offer of (insert figure here) Chf. Is this enough to live on?'

have there been in the last few days? I imagine if the employer is offering you the amount they have offered it will be enough to ensure you won't die of starvation or be pushed out onto the streets.

Most of the posters see there have been pleanty of answers to extremly similar questions and even have the cheek to include my favourite line:

'I know people have asked this before but......'

If you know its been asked before then just look at the other post you have obviously seen! When asking the question do you just want everone to sit at their computer and wish they made as much? Just be happy you have managed to find a job in the seriously difficult job market, something alot of us would kill for.

Sorry for the rant but I'm seriously bored of looking for a job and hearing so many people come on here bragging that they have one and are looking for a reason to not take it.

Re: I have an offer of 'x' much, will I become a homeless bum on this wage?

I saw the header of your post and thought someone was starting yet another tread asking the same repeated question. You're right, there seem to be quite a few threads starting the same way,( just different numbers) at the moment. Like you say, there are threads our there that have answered this question........lots of times.

Re: I have an offer of 'x' much, will I become a homeless bum on this wage?

I think the issue is not so much other people 'bragging' about getting a new and well-paid job... maybe more your feelings of frustration at not having one. I don't mean that offensively, but for the most part the people asking such questions probably don't know if it is an average wage or not, and have got to where they are by working hard and making themselves marketable in their chosen field. There's no need to be bitter towards others because of your own current difficult situation. Hope you find something soon though.

Most of these salaries wouldn't even cover the cooking and cleaning staff, let alone the butler, how can they possibly live on such meagre wages?

I'm not bitter its just annoying reading the same question over and over. The information is already on this site and with a little research countless others

To all people wanting to know whether their salary is sufficient: the median income in 2005 was around 95 mM chf, if the average person can live from this then so can you.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt about their intentions - be it genuine or bragging. Some people are just accustomed to a certain station in life before moving here. Whilst you have a point about the employers offering you a reasonable amount so that you wont starve, there are other considerations to take into account like lifestyle changes which they might not be comfortable with making if they were to move here on that salary due to a higher standard of living.

cleaning up complaint posts?
certainly it's true the average newbie can't find the search function but repeated complaints are just as bad.

It seems there is a core of EFers who can't resist clicking buttons.....and replying to a thread or submitting a new one makes what happen to it?

I vote for merging all threads. That'll make everything easy to find....it's all in one thread, innit?

If you're single then yes, that's a fairly reasonable assumption.

To be fair, though, a lot of the people asking these questions are not single.

Re: I have an offer of 'x' much, will I become a homeless bum on this wage?

I'm a newbie and managed to find the "Search" function. It's right there. Marked "Search." Quite valuable.

However, I honestly don't know how these people manage to live on only 3 million (125k, 100k) per year. If I don't get a new Aston Martin annually, I start to cry. Then I can't afford to pay a minion to wipe away my tears for me, not to mention a nanny for each of my children.

Sigh. I also liked the post yesterday that said students get paid to go to school. Where can I sign up for that gig?!? I know university is fairly cheap here, but wow!

Re: I have an offer of 'x' much, will I become a homeless bum on this wage?

I remember vaguely some thread where the poster was asking about 30K salary before tax. It might seem a lot if you are living in a developing country, but if you want to bring your wife/husband and a few kids, save and send money home, it would be a bit tight, no? So personally I don' mind those threads (except the ones where people are earning significantly more than me, of course )

Re: I have an offer of 'x' much, will I become a homeless bum on this wage?

i found the answers to these questions quite useful when we were first offered a transfer. especially from those that had done the same move as us from So-cal to Zurich (less useful to hear from someone that moved here from, say New Dehli or London, since our baselines would be so different).

anyways, no one's forcing you to read the thread if you don't want to read it.

Why there isn't a section of the forum dedicated to only this? maybe it'd be easy to find if you are new to the searches, something like "cost of living" and then subdivided per major city?

Or is it a silly idea?

...
when I joined, I had an email (or was it a screenshot?) telling me that it would be a good idea to start introducing myself in the "introduction" forum. I think it'd be good to have an addition "...and if you are looking for info about cost of living, wages etc, go to this section" or something similar... You'd probably end up with less threads about the same thing if you keep all the info in one place where they are accessible straight away...
But then i'm not a mod and i don't pretend to know the work involved behind it... just a suggestion
