Re: Gifts ideas for helpful Neightbours.

You could take them to the Basel Weinmesse (wine fair), coming up next week. It's a nice experience and not too pricey: http://www.baslerweinmesse.ch/.

Otherwise a dinner in a restaurant (I recommend kulturbeiz) is always nice or you could invite them for a cultural day, such as to see the newest exhibits at the Beyeler Foundation (one of my favorite museums).

Re: Gifts ideas for helpful Neightbours.

Something from where you've been is a nice gift - shows you actually thought about the favour they were doing while you were there.

Of course this advice isn't much use retrospectively!

I also wouldn't go overboard - these things can sometimes end up in a gift arms race, "last time they came to dinner they brought flowers, wine, chocolates and gift for the kids, so we should probably do the same and pay off their mortgage so they don't think we're cheap"

Re: Gifts ideas for helpful Neightbours.

We received from my very Swiss neighbours a small chocolate box from the mountains they'd been in during the 3 weeks I'd looked after their kitten.

From the other half Swiss neighbours, we received two beautiful printed African cloths from their travels for looking after their plants for the 4 weeks they were away.

I agree - sometimes these obligations can put quite a bit of responsibility on us.
I really don't have "green fingers" - but my neighbour is a biologist, so his plants are really important to them. And have never had a kitty, but am converted ever since.

Re: Gifts ideas for helpful Neightbours.

Our neighbors recently treated us to a meal in their home which was much better than wine or chocolate. They've also previously give us an orchid which is my favorite thing to receive!

Our nice and kind neighbours took care of our cat during our vacation. I would love to get them a gift to thank them for everything.

They took care of our mails (we didn't asked) they even took our cat home because she felt lonely. They took great care of her.

Any suggestions would be very very appreciated.

I was thinking of a bottle of wine but I don't know much about it, so if you can suggest something in there too...

Oh, I don't know if that can change something but they are german.

Wine always works. How about an invitation for a raclette or fondue?

Re: Gifts ideas for helpful Neightbours.

If your neighbours are Swiss then a few packets of post-it notes will always be well received.
